Subject: Erica MacKenzie Smith From: Suffet Date: 05 Dec 00 - 10:48 PM Are there any Erica MacKenzie Smith fans out there? I am guessing that I am not alone. If you haven't already heard her, you are in for a big treat. She has appeared as part of a trio called Ida Red, and as much as I love that group, I prefer to hear Erica solo. She is based in New York City. So what do I enjoy about Erica so much? In a word it's her simplicity. She just gets up there with her guitar and sings straight from the heart. But she's also witty, talented, intelligent, and -- dare I say it? -- pretty. Yeah, I know looks are only skin deep, yada yada yada. And I also know it might be construed as politically incorrect to say so in this day and age, but I still get a kick out of seeing a pretty woman -- especially one who can sing like she does! ---Steve |

A few points of news from EMS herself: 1. Hug Me [i.e. Erica], It's My [i.e. Erica's] Birthday Yes it's my birthday gig -- and to make 29 extra swingin' and special we're going to crank up the energy level. I'm blessed to work with a group of ace musicians: Andrew Heller on guitar and mandolin, Nick Smith on drums and tabla, and Jon Sobel on bass. Old songs have taken new and exciting turns; new songs sound just plain rad. 2. Subject: Erica 8/22/01 & 8/25/01 From: Suffet Date: 19 Aug 01 - 11:04 AM Message from Erica copied below, slightly edited so out-of-towners can find the venues. I'm the one responsible for most of the caps. erica is the literary daughter of e.e. cummings. --- Steve ********* just a note to say that I've got 2 shows coming up: Erica Smith and the Tumbleweeds The Sidewalk Cafe E. 6th St. and Ave. A, New York City Wednesday, 8/22/01, 10 PM . . . and with the fabulous Lisa Dicus, singing all our hootenanny faves Friday, 8/25/01, 8 PM Triad Bar & Lounge 158 W. 72nd St., near Broadway, New York City . . . something really random and interesting has happened at each and every gig this summer! Will another drunk clapping man reduce our hostess to a pile of jell-o(TM)? Will excessive frappucino(TM) intake make Andrew and Jon bounce around in a sugar frenzy? will a local eccentric 'dance to his own beat' in the doorway during the show? Come join the summer madness!!!! the website, maidmusic.com, is coming along quite nicely. check there for news and such! 'live in her living room' is now up at cdbaby.com: http://www.cdbaby.com/ericasmith hearken ye: check it out, write a nice review if you like, buy copies for your loved ones. thanks. see you soon! erica

Subject: RE: Erica MacKenzie Smith From: Suffet Date: 24 Dec 01 - 05:55 PM From Erica, nearly verbatim, forwarded by her #1 fan. ---- Steve ---------------------- hello friends and happy holidays: Erica Smith and the Tumbleweeds Saturday, December 29, 2001 10pm The Sidewalk Cafe East 6th & Avenue A New York City no cover / 2 drink min. I'm sending this one a wee bit early because I know lots of folks are leaving town! Please come down and join us whilst we joyously celebrate a CD release. We will have crates and crates of discs on hand for the humble price of $10. Hail, hail, the band will be there: Dave Campbell on drums, Jon Sobel on bass, Kenny Davidsen on piano, Andrew Heller on guitar. I feel priviliged indeed to work with such fine musicians and nice folks. They are the core band for the next CD, due out in the spring . . . . but more on that later!!! If you'd like to have a listen/gander at the new CD, please visit http://www.cdbaby.com/listenhere and click on . . . uh . . . my head. You can buy it there, as well as at Other Music NYC (West 4th St. across from Tower records). Mmmmm, what else. Oh, for those of you who have neither a 10-pound daily planner nor a palm pilot, but spend hours and hours at your computer -- surely I'm not the only one! -- go to http://www.maidmusic.com and you can download a very special e-invite. If you click on it once you will get an adorable wintery movie in Quicktime. Wheeeeeeee! |
Subject: RE: Erica MacKenzie Smith From: WFDU - Ron Olesko Date: 25 Dec 01 - 01:22 AM $10 for a CD of that quality is a real bargain. Erica, you should be charging twice that!!! I have a copy and have played it on my show, as has my co-host Bill Hahn. If you haven't heard her, do it quickly so that you will be able to say "I remember her when she was just starting out playing small clubs". (Just like all those folks who remember seeing Dylan at Folk City before he became famous - if everyone that said they saw him really did, the place would had to have been the size of Madison Square Garden.) Erica possesses a great voice, a knack for performing traditional tunes in a gorgeous setting, and she writes some damn good songs herself! Erica is part of a growing group of folksingers who are bringing traditional music BACK to Greenwich Village, and hopefully well beyond those borders! Erica is a talent that you don't want to miss. An unsolicited testimonial from one of her biggest fans. Ron Olesko WFDU-FM |
Subject: RE: Erica MacKenzie Smith From: Suffet Date: 25 Dec 01 - 08:49 AM Ron is right. Hurry up and hear Erica now, and then you can tell your children and grandchildren you saw her live at one of the legendary Sidewalk Cafe gigs. Ah, but I have a better tale to tell: Erica MacKenzie Smith opened for me and Richard Fried the first two times we appeared at Sun Music Company here in New York. If Erica becomes the latter day Bob Dylan, that makes me and Richard her collective John Lee Hooker! The bottom line is go and catch her show. As I said in my original message, Erica is witty, talented, intelligent, and -- dare I say it again? -- pretty. Expect to hear a young woman who sings like she really means it -- which she does! --- Steve |
Subject: RE: Erica MacKenzie Smith From: Erica Smith Date: 25 Dec 01 - 10:47 PM yikes -- i am blushing over here! thanks for your nice words. it should be a good show on Saturday. wrote a new song, cooked up some, uh, "new" trad ones . . . i am deliberately keeping the cd price low, but any and all proceeds do benefit my kitty roxy, who has racked up some medical expenses as of late . . . (her kidneys were failing but she's ok now.) i hope everyone is having a happy holiday. santa brought me the martin carthy box set!!! and his elves brought nic jones UNEARTHED a few weeks ago, so i'm in heaven! with holiday cheer, erica

Subject: Going to Heaven on 12/14/02! From: Suffet Date: 16 Nov 02 - 12:01 PM Yup, you heard me right. On December 14th of this year, 2002, I'm planning a trip right through the Pearly Gates. No, I'm not suicidal. And, yes, I'm still a free thinker. So the Heaven I am talking about is Musical Heaven, as pure and simple and beautiful as anything can be, here on Earth or in the admittedly allegorical Great Beyond. And why December 14th? Because that's the night The NexTradition -- Alison Kelley and Ken Schatz -- share the evening's program with Erica Smith at the Peoples' Voice Cafe here in New York City. (I still like to call her Erica MacKenzie Smith, although she has dropped the MacKenzie from her billings of late.) If you have never been to the Peoples' Voice, it's a trip and a half. It's an all-volunteer not-for-profit place which sells nutritious home baked snacks on the cheap, which is completely free from the odor of cigarette smoke, and which, above all, gives both the performers and the audience alike a fair shake. Where else can you get in for half price by saying that you're "up against the machine"? Here's the skinny: The NexTradition & Erica (MacKenzie) Smith People's Voice Cafe at the Workmen's Circle 45 East 33rd Street (between Madison & Park Avenues) Midtown Manhattan, New York City Saturday, December 14, 2002 8:00 PM sharp General admission: $10 or TDF voucher. Peoples Voice or Workmen's Circle members: $7. Senior or On Strike or Up Against the Machine: $5. For more information about the Peoples Voice Cafe... Telephone: (212) 787-3903 Website: click here! Now a few words about the performers... Wow! Wow! And wow again! OK, I'll be a little more specific. The NexTradition, Alison and Ken, sing a cappella, mostly traditional songs or songs written in traditional style. Expect to hear what Heather Wood of the legendary Young Tradition calls "deep roots and dangerous harmonies" as Alison and Ken sing anything from prison worksongs to maritime ballads to Kipling's poetry set to music. (Heather Wood, by the way, gave The NexTradition their name!) Erica is a singer-songwriter, folksinger, anti-folksinger, guitar-picking angel, subtle wit, and potential she-devil all rolled into one. And -- is it too politically incorrect to say this? -- she's pretty. I mean really pretty. She batted her eyelashes in my direction one time and I gave her my mountain dulcimer. (Alison and Ken ain't bad looking, either!) Rather than continuing my rant, let me point you to The NexTradition's and Erica Smith's respective websites. TNT: click here! Erica: click here! I'll conclude with just two words -- BE THERE! --- Steve |
