TEARDROPS FALLING IN THE SNOW

Page by page our lives are written
In the Master's book above
Wonder if he makes an entry
For each darlin' mother's love
Like the one I saw this mornin'
In her though the station door
She was cryin', softly cryin'
Teardrops falling in the snow

As she came up to the window
Passing me, I let her through
She was waiting for a casket
One draped in red white & blue
Then she said "I'll wait outside, Sir
Soon I know you're train will blow"
I could see her through the window
Teardrops falling in the snow

Then the whistle of the engine
Broke the silence of the air
As the train was slowly stopping
Upon her lips I saw a prayer
On the box there was a number
And the name was right below
As she looked upon the casket
Teardrops falling in the snow

There's a new-made grave a-waiting
And it's depths are dark and cold
Just to claim this mother's darlin'
War for her has taken toll
But I'm sure they'll meet up yonder
Where God's children always go
And I always will remember
Teardrops falling in the snow

Thanks for great lyrics to a great old tearjerker. This song reached immortality on the strength of Molly O'Day's powerful voice. She was an unrestrained, melodramatic mountain singer from the Golden Days of the Renfro Valley Barn Dance. Other gems from her collection include "The Black Sheep," "Tramp on the Street" and "When God Comes and Gathers His Jewels."

Researching various WWII songs, and Molly O'Day did this song about 1942. I found the lyrics via google.

Thanks!!!!!

Are you gonna share the lyrics with us, wilco? (If you had to use google, I'm guessing they are not in the DT or forum.)

I'd like to see the lyrics and chords, and hear a MIDI, too.

Genie

This is a favorite of mine as well. Vintage tearjerker, and a dose of reality heard in the midst of war fever. Molly O"Day was one of Kentucky's best, with a demonstrative delivery and lots of heart. Her version of "Tramp on the Street" is essential gospel.

Gern. I agree. "Tramp on the Street" is my favorite song. I work with a lot of homeless, mentally ill people, and that song says it all.

Great song made greater by the great Charlie Moore. Bluegrass musics most underrated performer.
