I have a request to play this song at a gig tonight. Has these words in it:

"I've laid around and played this old town too long."

Can anyone help me out?

GOTTA TRAVEL ON
Recorded by Billy Grammer
Words and music by Paul Clayton

I've laid around and played around this old town too long
Summer's almost gone; Yes, winter's comin' on
I've laid around and played around this old town too long
And I feel like I've gotta travel on

Papa writes to Johnny; But Johnny can't come home
Johnny can't come home; No, Johnny can't come home
Papa writes to Johnny; But Johnny can't come home
'Cause he's been on the chain gang too long

High sheriff and police; Ridin' after me
Ridin' after me; Yes, comin' after me
High sheriff and police ridin' after me
And I feel like I've gotta travel on

Want to see my honey; Want to see her bad
Want to see her bad; Oh! want to see her bad
Want to see my honey; Want to see her bad
She's the best gal this poor boy ever had

There were many authors to the words of this song. I believe it is officially attributed to Paul Clayton, Larry Ehrlich, Bill Monroe, Billy Grammer and sometimes more. Clayton had the chorus. Then the old folk process took hold. When it became a hit for Grammer everyone got into it who had a part of its ongoing transformations.
