Rob,

Can't make 21/8 as I live in Kent. However, I'm visiting my in-laws near Chester zoo at the end of Sept - is their a folk club at the Cross Keys every Sunday night?? If so, I might pop in - last time I went to a folk club in Chester it was in a pub opposite the station.

Raven Folk Club

Note that on 28th September their guests are Tanglefoot (Canada), but the venue is changed for that one night to Hoole Community Centre.

Mr Happy.... good singing or what? Jones's Ale certainly peaked at the Watergate. I suppose you could plot a family tree of clubs in Chester.

Did the Raven happen out in Holt or Bangor on Dee many years ago? Goff rings a bell, and his brother who played banjo?

As I remeber the first club was in that pub on the corner near the bus station and I think it was run by a collection of people including Mike Jenkins and Graham ??? who later started Chester City Morrismen. Mike, I understand, sadly passed away.

Mike and his brother Dave started Jones's Ale with a bloke called Trevor. I think Trevor was a heating engineer or something. He broke his leg and went to run a Golf Club in North Wales. At first JA was in a pub over that north west corner. I think I sang there a bit but I can't really remember since ale numbs the brain.

I do remember Steve and Nidge leading incredible harmony versions of who's pigs are these and Colin Howarth singing songs written by his dad, Lesley Howarth, founder of Manley Morris(?)

Sorry this is thread slippage and I have been spoken to about such
appalling practice.

Best of luck to the Raven!

Les,

yes there was a weekly folk night in Farndon at the Raven pub, hence the fc name [like lots of places-its been renamed & called the Farndon Arms now- all big screem footie etc].

you're also spot on about the 'family tree' of sessions in chester which historically sprang from J's Ale.

do you remember Edgar's 8 at the Bull & Stirrup?

The Bull & Stirup! That was the pub by the bus station. I saw Heddy West there almost before the war ie about 1964. I left the Chester area in 1974, Ellesmere Port actually and I think Edgar's was just getting going then.
