This Saturday ( Nov 8th) is The Maghull Day of Music. Maghull is on the very edge of Liverpool in north-west England. I love this annual event which is held in the local town hall - which is more like a large social centre / art centre. The ambiance is terrific - as is the guest list which includes the amazing Vin Garbut who is a very funny man and a great singer of wonderful songs. Also, on the bill are Maire Ni Chathasaigh and Chris Newman, and a very interesting female French singer called Flossie. If you can't make it this year, don't worry as next year's event will be equally as marvelous.

Interesting! I havn't heard that Maire Ni Chathasaigh and Chris Newman, were on the bill.
The line up as I understand it is,
Vin Garbutt, John Wright Band, Risky Business, Bakelite Boys, It's the Girl, Flossie, Kieren Halpin & Chris Jones, F.B.I. Blues.
Last minute changes?
I hope to be there.

Les

I don't think Chris & Moira will be there, as they are currently touring New Zealand & Fiji, returning on 12th November.
See http://www.obm.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/index.html

However, it does look as if Bram Taylor will be there.

Yes, Bram will be there - apparently he was booked after the publicity had already gone to the printers.

Events on Saturday run from 1pm to 11.30pm. Admission is strictly by ticket only - tickets are £13. If you want to go and haven't yet got a ticket, do ring to check on availability, as this is one festival which is almost always sold out beforehand, and I hear there are very few tickets left at this stage. Numbers to ring are: 0151 531 9273 or 0151 526 6661 or 0151 526 1082.

There is also a concert tonight (Friday 7th)(same venue, same organisers) with Last Night's Fun and Harvey Andrews. Starts 8pm, tickets £5. Again, ring beforehand to check.

Bram entertained us in St Albans last night and left before breakfast and made Sandbach by 10.30
He did a mean 'Vin Garblet'
Who does the bookings for this Fest?
George Papavgeris, who will be at Cecil Sharps this Tues 11th, can be made available for next year- given plenty of warning- seeing as Vin features his songs in his set.
Hope its a big success, bugger all here tonight

breezy, the contact I have down for Maghull Folk Club (who organise this event) is Joe Ryan, the first of the phone numbers I quoted above. I'm not sure if he's the one who also does the bookings, but if not I'm sure he'll redirect you. The other numbers belong to Jane Day and Mikki Boardman respectively. None of them appear to have email addresses, and the club doesn't have a website as far as I'm aware.

Joan

Sunday Morning. Didn't get away from the event 'til nearly midnight. Had a great time. Highpoints? So many. Vin Garbut, of course - he's sensational. If anyone out there doesn't know his music get his " Plugged" album - you won't regret it. The Bakelite Boys' ( which include Dave Sealey from Cosmotheka) act consisted of singing a hit song from every year of the 20th century, which they put across in a very humorous and entertaining way. I was impressed by " Risky Business" who had a lovely stage manner and a repetoire of very interesting materiel. Flossie, a singer from southern France but now resident in England was disappointinging. She has a lot going for her with her dark good looks and easy manner but often her choice of material lether down. She can do much better than belting out " Proud Mary". She needs to sit down and take a musical stock of herself - and ideally get some sound " outside" advice.
Bram Taylor put in a very solid performance which included a duet with Vin Gargut on ERic Clapton's " Wonderful Tonight"; actually, it was a solo performance but, part way through, Bram drifted into a wonderful Vin Garbut impersonation which had the audience on their feet.
I didn't catch the John Wright Band and the rest of the guest list but hopefully somebody else can add their comments.
This event is worth travelling a long way to attend, and if the good lord's willing, and the creeks don't rise, I'll be there next year.
