Having yet another session hit by the session police. (two in a month ) does anyone have any idea of a pub in Sheffield which welcome a session on the first Tuesday night of the month.   Usual suspects - 1 piper,1 fiddler, 1 drummer, 1 melodian , 1 singer and occaisional flutes.   Preferable central or near 57 bus route but really anywhere will do.   Musicians rather good.

Any ideas welcome.

Julie

Mainly tunes - irish / scottish a few odds and end. A little bit of traditional unaccompanied singing , slowly becoming accompanied. Original session was at the Gardeners.

There are Irish sessions at Fagans and I believe at The Kelham Island tavern on tuesdays (the latter may be only once a month). There's also the (nominally) university session at the Red House. they're a pretty welcoming bunch and despite the University label, there's a big range of students, ex students and non-students.

The Kelham Tavern one is us( third Tuesday of month). I think we would quite like to keep the first tuesday going as a separate session as it has been going for a long time and is the nucleus of a band. Thanks for the suggestions though. Any more ?

Have you tried the New Barracks? They often have live music.

I will definately suggest it but there may be problems with who's allowed out when. Personally I'm a completely free agent (allowing for anxious teenage daughter) so I'm only limited by how safe I feel coming back on the train to Sheffield.

Hi Julie,

Could you elaborate a bit on what you mean by "session police"? Was it actual local authorities? If so, I'm quite confused, because I would think that surely Gardener's Rest has a PEL... or do you mean it in a different sense?

*Might* be worth checking out the Hillsborough Hotel; I understand they're under new management, so even tho they used to be open only Thurs-Sun evenings, there's a (small) chance they might now be open be open Tues eves...

Or what about the place where Robin Garside & Dave Atkinson have started having sessions on 1st & 3rd Mon eves: Sportsman Pub, Worrall Road, Wadsley, Sheffield 6? (I read about it in Stirrings.)

I was going to suggest the Red Deer, but according to the "Events" page of their website, they already have events on 1st & 2nd Tuesdays.

Anyway... good luck!

YY

Hi YY

No the Gardener's has not renewed its PEL and will only do a few evnts through the year. Sportsman is poss but it depends on number of sessions they want and its on the 58 bus route - very convient. Had forgotten about that one.

See you at the Red Deer on Thursday.

Julie

Julie,

I'm really surprised to hear they've not renewed their PEL -- they have been SO music-oriented! Is it because they're waiting to see what will happen with the implementation of the new laws, or maybe thought they'd save money by waiting 'til the new law kicks in & automatically allows them to have music? Sorry for the thread creep, but I'm very curious...

Yes, see you at Red Deer -- I suppose I should save my questions 'til then. ;-)

Cheers,

YY

music police also hit MCFATs singaround at the Palm on a Thursday and has shut that down too! Perhaps Sheffield has decided it doesnt like its folk music scene!

It would be useful to have some firm information about who is exactly saying what to whom and what the result is. And what (if anything) is being done locally to prevent it? I would suggest that it looks as if the time for keeping one's head down in is long past.

PEL cops appeared at 8pm on the night and read the landlord the riot act thretening him with fines unless he buys the licence at around £700. For those who haven't been to the Palm it's a small off street boozer and the sesh is popular. the landlord (Little Dave) was devastated he's trying to sort things out but in the meantime in deference to his licence we've suspended the sesh and are seeking advice.

I told you on Thursday when I turned up to the Palm that I was a jinx. Don't even need to open my mouth to sing.

Sorry to hear about that, Jim. Why can't they just leave us people alone? It seems to be illegal to have a good time these days.

I thought acoustic music was exempt and the Gardener's was just getting occasional licences when needed?

No The Gardeners had earlier been targeted in the same way the Palm was last week. They got a PEL but couldn't justify renewing it.

Not sure of any town centre pubs. Dog might be amenable to a session too.

Why not make the buggers work for their money and ask the Licensing People for a list of places who do have a licence?

I would have thought the back room of the New Barrack would be OK. Or room of Fat Cat?

really disgraceful behaviour by the cops. particularly when you think about how under policed some areas of Sheffield are. The minister of culture should be informed what they are up to, as it is completely outside the spirit of the law. they promised us when this entertainment licence business came up that they would encourage the growth of folk music.

The business of the police should be protecting the community not using the letter of the law to piss around and generally irritate minorities - like folk singers.
