Can anybody tell me the placenames mentioned in Ian and Sylvia's Pride of Petrivar? I love the tune, but I'm reluctant to perform it because I can't make them out and just sure as shootin' if I tried to fake it somebody would call me on it.... I haven't even been able to find what country it's set in, but I think either Scotland or Ireland. Any help appreciated...

Hi,

Are you talking about "Eileen Oge" (the Pride of Petrivore)? If so it was written by Percy French.

we've had a few threads on this before..... I'll see if I can find them.

alison...

thanx a bunch -- and I guess I should thank BAZ too for the posting. It's definitely the same song, tho' with slightly different words and the misspelled title on the album cover....

cheers

pedra voher referred to a man, Peter the glan man, (peter mcgovern), he lived in glangevlin, co cavan ireland. i believe in 1860's. his area became a voting district. you can see it in records where people went to vote in co. cavan. percy french wrote a song, "eileen oge" which was supposedly the girlfriend of pedra voher.

Here's a link to Percy's original version of his song as posted to the Oldpoetry website: Click here for original song!

No doubt any version anyone has heard recorded has been somewhat folk-processed. My uncle recorded a version of it as well in the 1950's and it was certainly one of my favorite songs.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble
