Subject: Ashwell Winter Sing 2007 - 17-18/11/07
From: Lanfranc

The 2007 Ashwell Winter Sing will be held over the weekend of the 17th/18th November, 2007 at the Bushel & Strike, Ashwell, Herts.

More details on my website which will be updated over the next few days.

There will be no Friday evening session this year, but we hope to arrange overnight camping again for the Saturday night.

PM me if you want more information than is currently available on the website.

Hope to see all last year's participants plus some new friends.

Alan

Subject to his health considerations, I am hoping to tempt Derek Brimstone along for the Saturday evening concert, even if it is only for a couple of songs!

There has recently been a change of landlord at the Bushel & Strike.

Went there today and met with the new landlord, Chris. He is in the middle of some renovations and restorations but the pub will reopen on 14th October in plenty of time for the Winter Sing in November.

The only effects of the change will be that the Saturday night session may well have to end sooner (what was it - 3am last year?) and there can't be any indoor camping at the Bushel itself. I'm PMing IanC to see if there is a Scout Hall or similar in Ashwell we could hire for this purpose for the Saturday night.

Motorhomes and even caravans would appear to be OK in the Car Park, though. These will have to be booked in advance, and any surplus will have to use the nearby caravan park.

As before - watch this space!

Great, we've been wondering if this would be on again after such a good weekend last year.If there's no indoor camping I'll try to get a B & B.

Hi Guru

Will you be running the Saturday evening singaround whilst the dance is going on?

I would have come last year if I'd known, but I didn't, so I didn't

Hi Ross, first I've heard of it.... or is this anything to do with my reckless behaviour last year following imbibing a little too much? The old memory is lapsing yet again *oh dear*

No - I only heard good reports

Evidently you were singing around the diners

They said it sounded very nice

Here's the summary from Ian C

'In the evening, a slight hiatus with the meals meant that the Ceilidh didn't start till 9:00 so Hilary started a small session in the back bar, which continued on through the evening. Quite a good good move, this, as it kept us entertained while we were eating. It might have made us a bit short for the Ceilidh, though, had the Old Wild Rovers not been so wholehearted about dancing all evening. Despite Linda's difficulties with the calling, it was actually a great dance ... I've often played the Horse's Bransle, but I've never seen it danced before. Gets difficult playing the melodeon when you're bent double with laughing.'

Am thinking of coming to the Winter Sing. What happens? Will there be singing, dancing? What sort of music? Will there be food? Somebody mentioned indoor camping. Is that going to go ahead. Or will we have to book somewhere?

What's this about 'Linda's difficulties with the calling'. I felt like just dancing and showing them how it's done. (I'd only ever called once before). I'll be very happy to join in the dancing this year but NOT the calling!!!

It's a pity it's so far away.

I've only been back from Whittlebury for two days and I'm starting to get cravings for the folk community.

It would be nice to see you again Alan. You've not been North for a long time.

Bad news, I'm afraid!

As per my email of 27th September, there has been a change of ownership at the Bushel and Strike. When I went to see the owner last week he gave every appearance of being interested and co-operative.

However he has now appointed a manager who is not only uninterested and unco-operative, but the bu**er has cancelled our booking. The impression being that he didn't want his newly refurbished gastropub sullied by a bunch of folkies. The open mic sessions at the B&S will cease as well, as far as I can tell nothing to do with licensing issues, just a non-musical manager.

Desperately seeking another venue, but, in view of the timescale, it seems unlikely that we will find one.

Yours, gutted (and that's a lot of guts!)

Alan

Oh that's a real shame Alan, what a Ba**ard!! Maybe the function room at the Bull at Barton is free? Just a thought, Ross would be able to find out.

Subject: Ashwell Winter Sing 2007 Cancelled!
From: Lanfranc

Following on from the original post

The new manager at the Bushel and Strike 'phoned me this evening (October 2nd) and cancelled our booking for the Winter Sing. Pleas about late notice and advertising already paid for fell on deaf ears.

Despite initial confirmation from the new owner that we could go ahead, it is apparent that his newly appointed manager does not want his newly refurbished gastropub sullied by beer-swilling folkies, even if there would have been 60+ of them prepared to spend several hundred pounds on food and drink over what will probably be a quiet winter weekend.

May his beer go rancid and his food decompose uneaten!

If anyone can suggest a more sympathetic venue, we're open to suggestions, but I fear that there may not be enough time to rescue the 2007 Winter Sing.

A shame, to say the least, but there it is. "Pactum meum verbum" no longer obtains!

How about the Lion at Eastwick.Near Harlow?

They have a music licence. Regular sessions on Tuesdays. They may be open to something. There is a small back bar there, as well as the main bar

Another suggestion is The Half Moon, North Street, Bishops Stortford. Their back bar is host to a regular session. They are a well known music venue in the area

Thanks for all the advice re alternative venues. We'll be following them up over the next few days.

I have exchanged PMs with Ross re the Bull at Barton-le-Clay, which looks like a great venue but may require passports as it is in Bedfordshire.

Also going to the Half Moon tomorrow evening.

There is a bit of a problem with the lack of notice, but I don't want to give up easily!

Thanks, Joe, for combining the posts - for future reference, can we mere users change the headings?

Geordie-Peorgie - that's another option we will try. Don't know the pub, myself - do they have a big enough room to hold about 60? Will investigate.

Richard - there was nothing like a written contract, just a series of exchanged emails, a couple of telephone conversations and a visit. Total advertising and other expenses to date less than £100 which doesn't buy much solicitor time. Besides which, if the manager doesn't want us there, is there any point in forcing the matter?

It seems such a shame that the pub doesn't want us, but the Manager obviously doesn't understand that we are Real People. Sorry that your delicate negotiations have failed Alan, am certain that something will present itself, lets be positive! Understand about the passport to Bedfordshire thing, with all the grief we have with the large circular car park I tend to forget that there's such a thing as distance and wiggly roads.

We have a solution!

The Bull at Barton has been provisionally booked by Ross (to whom be all praise and thanks!). Watch for updates - some changed timings and B&B and other issues to be sorted, but we have a venue in a friendly pub.

Whewwwww!

Alas, another tale of pub 'management' who ever look only at the short term picture.

My session in Chester had to move for similar reason, see here:

thread.cfm?threadid=104739&messages=22

This 'manager' seems will just lose business for the pub, hopefully this ineptitude will be found & he'll reap his just desserts.

Good luck with your venture at the new place!
