Greetings,

I heard Malvina Reynolds several times in the 1960s. I recently heard her daughter Nancy Shimmel sing at a People's Music Network workshop in Brookline, Massachusetts. She sounds just like her mom did.

There's a young (early 30s) singer-songwriter named Heather Lev who has been giving presentations on Malvina Reynolds for folk music societies and at festivals in the Northeast for the past several years. In addition to singing Malvina's songs, Heather shows a video of Malvina performing, reads some of Malvina's writing, and passes around Malvina Reynolds memoribilia, including an autographed songbook. Heather Lev will soon be relocating from New York City to Seattle, so maybe she will start doing the same in the Pacific Northwest.

I thought of her while driving through Daly City last August, the area that inspired "Little Boxes".

Nancy Shimmel   I will have to check out her music. I have not heard her daughter ... sounds like a plan

The Showtime miniseries "Weeds" uses "Little Boxes" as its theme song. We don't subscribe to Showtime, and so didn't (and still don't) see this program when it "airs" on cable TV, but when it became available on DVD, we watched the first two seasons in a short time, one episode after another.

If I'm not mistaken, the first season used Malvina's original recording to open every episode, and then, for the second season, they used a different cover version for each episode. Pretty interesting; there are a lot of very different versions of this song!

My friend Gina Forsyth, a New Orleans-based singer/songwriter, guitarist and fiddler, is part of an all-female trio called "The Malvinas" in honor of Ms. Reynolds. They have at least one CD, and they have a website you could find easily enough via Google or whatever.

I liked her music, never saw her live. I always thought Little Boxes was a bit judgemental , stereotyping people's lifestyles. It seemed out of character with her other songs and social concerns.

There are a number of Malvina Reynolds performances on You Tube.

I used to occassionally see Malvina when I lived in Berserkely, used to crash at the anarchist commune across the street. When she came to New York to play at the Folklore Center where I worked, she hired me as her backup guitarist. 2 days later I got a check from her for the gig. I wasn't expecting anything, did it for the fun of it. The amount was almost as much as she got for the concert! She was a class act.

Olddude,

Here's a link to Nancy Schimmel's website. Sorry that I misspelled her name earlier.

This is listed on the Nancy Schimmel Website, but it's a bit hard to fine. There is a huge collection of Malvina Reynolds lyrics at http://www.wku.edu/~smithch/MALVINA/homep.htm.
Also - see the other threads crosslinked above, especially the "Everything Malvina" thread.

Great story, Mark - I always enjoy hearing of your experiences.

Does anyone else think that Bev Grant sounds a lot like Malvina?

Oldhippie,

I never thought of that before. I hear some resemblance, but I can't really say Bev sounds a lot Malvina. Certainly they share much of the same attitude.

I'll mention that the next time I see Bev.

You're not Bruce Markow, are you?

Greetings again,

Heather Lev will be giving her "Farewell to New York" concert at the Peoples' Voice Cafe in New York City on Saturday, April 26, starting at 8:00 PM. Also on the bill is Boston based singer-songwriter Terry Kitchen. Unfortunately, that conflicts with NEFFA, where Heather has appeared for the last several years. Heather Lev and her husband, guitarist Stuart Krasna, are moving to Seattle the following week. New York's loss, Seattle's gain!
