2021 Obit: RIP Alan Moorhouse, Alanabit

Alan was back in the UK from Cologne where he has worked as teacher, translator and musician, in Cornwall, being treated for terminal pancreatic cancer but still making music when able and planting a new garden. He went into a hospice recently. His Facebook posts were always positive. I never met him except here and on Facebook but I shall miss him and his music. Luckily I have his AMB band CD to remember him by.

I’m very, very sorry we’ve lost Alan Moorhouse. Yes, only knew him through Mudcat and Facebook, but felt close to him. It is a sad world without his kindness, and his beautiful music.

I think he has a new CD in the works in Germany. He said something about it on FB recently.

A lovely guy.
I was in Germany when Germany was doing the world cup when I met him. He came to the hotel, and we took him and his wife out for a meal in the old town bit of Cologne.

Afterwards he stopped with us a short while and he was very gracious about my attempt at vegetarian cooking. He was a bit cut up about Brexit, and not long after that he started with the cancer.

Iwill miss his presence on the net. He was a great songwriter - my favourite was his song The Looe Boys

He was a good guy.I remember he shared a lot in threads about busking

My musical partner, Sandy Andina, made the best comment I've seen so far. She said, "He was a good friend across the miles, a talented musician & writer, and had a wit so rapier-sharp that it had to be registered with Interpol as a deadly weapon. May his memory be for a blessing--as his talent surely was."
I can't improve on that. I'm miss him.

I have been dreading this since first he shared his diagnosis with us all. His positive attitude was humbling, and I'm sure that's what got him this far. I have had a couple of friends with that form of cancer, and it's not one that many survive at all. Alan did well to make it this far, and many of us will miss his contribution to our lives, his positivity, and his all round good guy personality.
We chatted on Messenger a couple of times, and through him I made contact with someone I had known from the 60's folk scene in London, Colin Wilkie. Colin left us recently too, so all in all it's been a sad old world lately.
RIP Alan, you were an example to us all mate.

Very sad news although expected, knew Alan for many years and met him a few times when I was touring in Northern Germany, a good singer and excellent songwriter. Alan could have made much more of his music than he did but he was content with things the way they were, I got a message from him the day before he died. R.I.P Alan.

Sad to hear he is gone. I never made it to Cologne to meet him, but I liked his Mudcat posts. We seem to have lost quite a few of the "first Mudcat generation" recently!

"gnu" has posted in a new thread
!I was saddened today to learn Alan recently passed. He was a Mudcatter of note from England. We spoke many times of his travels in Europe, mostly in Germany. His brother Jeremy has since edited his book and published it. I look forward to reading it.

The book does sound interesting, and Jeremy's work on the book is a great show of respect for Alan.

Alanabit had been one of my best friends from the day we met as newbies at university in England in October 1981. We played together pretty much all over western Europe at one point.

I'm not sure how many of his Mudcat friends will be aware but he released four albums, the last around the time of his premature passing. I've uploaded them all to Bandcamp (with his blessing and at his specific request) and they can be found at alanmoorhouse.bandcamp.com. You can listen up to three times without paying anything but downloads come at a small cost, all proceeds of which will go to his daughter. If you're minded to purchase downloads, don't do it yet as I'll be reducing the price in the next few days. I'll add to this thread when I've done that.

Hard CD copies of his latest album are available from his daughter; please let me know if you'd like one. Be aware, however, that she's in Germany and postage to north America can be quite pricey.

To all of Alan's Mudcat friends: whether you knew him in real life or not, may your memories of him be as wild as mine are. I'll remember the man who taught me a lot as a musician and songwriter; the guy I got stupid drunk with more times than I can recall; the man who turned up at my wedding in a beret and flip flops; and the man I regarded as my closest friend.

Thank you Cheshire Cat, for your warm words, and the Bandcamp info. I was one of those who never met Alan in the flesh, although we chatted virtually a few times, and I felt as if I'd known him for years. We also had a few friends in common, from way back in my London folk scene days. he is much missed.
