Lyr Req: Mexicali Rose

Subject: Looking for a song
From: Diva

A good friend of mine is looking for a song called Mexicali Rose........tune and lyrics.....can anyone help?

Please Note

When you start a thread at Mudcat, please try to pick a title that specifically describes what you're looking for. Generic thread titles like this one cause a lot of confusion, and people often follow up and make it more confusing by adding requests for other songs.
For best results, please follow these guidelines:
  • Give threads specific titles
  • Please do not request more than one song in a thread

Even though the title of this thread is a problem for us, our trusty Mudcatters went out and found what you're looking for.
Thanks.

Reference the lyrics on the clicky site above, my music has these lyrics BEFORE the ones given:
Mexicali Rose, I'm leaving,
Don't feel blue,
Mexicali Rose, stop grieving,
I love you.
When the dove of love is winging through the blue,
all the castles you've been building,
Will come true.

(then into what is given)This is the way the abc is. There are also some real doozies of chords in here.

I am looking for the lyrics for a folk song about the settle to carlisle railway in england.

The song starts with "it was in the year of sixty-nine, they planned to run a train, from settle to carlisle all across the mountain..........?????"

Sigh...a couple of people don't seem to have read Joe's message a little higher up this page.  It's hard to miss, I should have thought.  Never mind; the song you're looking for is easily found by typing settle and carlisle into the "Digitrad and Forum Search" box on the main Forum page.  Here is a shortcut to it:  SETTLE TO CARLISLE RAILWAY

You can see the sheet music online at Indiana University Sheet Music Collections:

MEXICALI ROSE
Words, Helen Stone. Music, Jack B. Tenney.
Spanish translation by Manuel Sanchez De Lara.
Chicago : M. M. Cole Publishing Co., 1923.

1. Mexicali Rose, I'm leaving. Don't feel blue.
Mexicali Rose, stop grieving. I love you.
When the dove of love is winging through the blue,
All the castles you've been building will come true.

CHORUS: Mexicali Rose, stop crying.
I'll come back to you some sunny day.
Ev'ry night you'll know that I'll be pining,
Ev'ry hour a year while I'm away.
Dry those big brown eyes and smile, dear.
Banish all those tears and please don't sigh.
Kiss me once again and hold me.
Mexicali Rose, goodbye.

2. Mexicali Rose, I'll miss you when I go.
There'll be times I'll long to kiss you; that I know.
All the while I'll just be yearning, lonesome too,
Counting days till I'm returning, dear, to you.

Mexicali Rosa, Tengo que partir.
Mexicali Rosa, no debes sufrir.
En mis largas horas yo te estrañaré,
Y tus iluziones yo realizaré.

CHORUS: Mexicali Rosa no llores;
Piensa que muy pronto volveré,
Y que siempre triste sin Consuelo,
Cada non che y dia yo pasaré,
Seca tus hermossos ojos,
Deja de llorar y suspirar.
Besa me otra vez y es tré chame;
Mexicali Rosa adios.

Surprised this wasn't among the songs entered in Mudcat years ago.
I remember my grandmother picking it out on her guitar; it was composed the year I was born.

Mexicali Rose originated in 1921 when Jack Tenney was a piano
player at the Owl Theatre, formerely the Owl Cafe and Dance Hall,
destroyed by Earthquake in 1913. Tenney, who later investigated
Paul Robeson and Edgar G Robinson for suspected Communist
leanings, composed this song as "The Waltz" His saxophonist Jack
Hazelip noticed an ageing 200 lbs oe more woman who always cried
when this piece was played. And he called her "Mexicali Rose. The
Helen Stone provided lyrics and the song was published in 1923.
Gene Autry sang it in a film of the same name 1939 (so how come
did Bing Crosby popularise it??? Burl Ives also recorded it as did
Teresa Brewer. You mudcatters can hear, on Utube Jerry Lee Lewis
and Gene Autry perform Mexicali Rose. My favourite rendition is by
Scottish singer, Karl Denver. As a teenager I heard Karl sing this
in support of a Beatles concert at the Odeon, Hammersmith........;
I Invite all you Mudcatters to listen to my cover songs on
James Molloy Tumbleweed. God Bless You All, I love you

Here's a site with several MIDI's of the piece. It may be there in other formats as well.
