Lyr Req: The Tourist's Complaint (Leon Rosselson)

Subject: Coca-Cola song
From: GUEST,Andy Howes

I'm looking for the lyrics of a song which is either called 'The Coca-Cola Song', or 'The Coca-Cola Always Tastes the Same'.

The chorus goes :-
Oh I have seen the Mona Lisa,
The Leaning tower of Pisa,
Been to Rome and back again;
But the only thing I know
is that everywhere I go,
The Coca-cola always tastes the same.

It used to be sung a lot in the 60's but I haven't hrard it since; I'd very much like to sing it again.

Don't remember seeing that one. The Coca-Cola one I remember, partially, is I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing. Are those words part of it that I don't remember?

This is one time mudcat has not come up with the lyrics of a song. I asked for the words over two years ago, it usually takes about two minutes. This time we might be lucky Andy, The Leasiders from Liverpool usede to sing it but I lost touch with Bob Buckle so couldn't ask him.

The song is by Leon Rosselson. I can't remember which record but words, music and chords are in 'Look Here' Songs by Leon Rosselson, Harmony Music 1968, my copy cost ten shillings and sixpence, every song a gem. First saw him at the Leesiders club in Birkenhead, brilliant!

THE TOURIST'S COMPLAINT
(Leon Rosselson)

Well, I've done my tourist duty up and down the Eiffel Tower
And I've watched flamenco dancing in Seville.
I've sampled Spanish sherry and been down with dysentery,
Cos it's not a holiday unless you're ill.
I've seen the Cote d'Azur where the air is clean and pure
And the Coca-Cola adverts grow on trees.
The waiters are offensive and the scenery's expensive
And they charge you ten percent just to breathe.

CHORUS:
Cos I've seen the Mona Lisa and the leaning Tower of Pisa.
I've been to Timbuktu and back again;
But the only thing I know is that everywhere I go,
The Coca-Cola always tastes the same.

I've got stacks of souvenirs I've collected over years,
Like gondolas that play Santa Lucia.
I've got ash trays, bags and boxes and a little wooden whatsit,
But what's it for I've not the least idea.
It was from an Arab peasant in the middle of the desert
That I bought a native pot made of clay,
But when I turned it over, it was only to discover,
It was manufactured in the USA.

Once I found a quiet village in the heart of Sicily.
No cars or noisy tourists did I meet;
And the view was picturesque as the sun set in the west
And the natives urinated in the street.
Well, their folk customs were charming. I remember well one morning
When the Mayor and 13 others all got shot,
And I thought that things were swinging
When the church bells started ringing.
Then they rang for 30 days without a stop.

Now I've had my photo taken in a market in Tangier,
And last year went to see the sites of Greece,
But the only thing I saw were a million other tourists
And I'd seen them all the year before in Nice.
So next year I'll stay at home. No longer will I roam.
I don't care what the blooming(?) neighbours say.
I'll buy a sun-ray lamp and a set of foreign stamps
And I'll send myself a postcard every day.

Have fun

Les Jones

Was this jingle used on the left side of the Atlantic or just in the UK? I don't remember ever hearing it.

This was not an advertising jingle, it was a song written by Leon Rossellson in the sixties and sung around the folk clubs in the UK

There're three Coca-Cola songs in Peter & Craig Norback, Great Songs of Madison Avenue (Quadrangle, 1976), with lyrics, chords and piano arrangements: "Fifty Million Times a Day" (by Ben Ludlow), "It's the Real Thing. Coke" (by Bill Backer), and "Things Go Better With Coke" (by Bill Backer).

But the only thing I know is, that every where I go

The Coca Cola always tastes the same

Apparently Coca-Cola does NOT always taste the same.

Coca-Cola made in the US is sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup, but the Coca-Cola made in Mexico is sweetened with cane sugar.

I doubt that I could tell the difference, but enough people think they can to create a market for imported Coke.

See this article in the San Diego Union-Tribune: Is Mexican Coke the real thing?

Could someone do a YouTube posting of 'The Tourist's Complaint'?? It would make a good Cv19 song to share at the moment.

At last! I've been trying to find the words for ages. Not even Leon's website mentions it. I can remember half of the tune - now all I have to do is remember the rest!
Veterans of the Derby folk-scene - Peasmouldia etc - will remember Gib singing this.

Aye, no holidays booked this year!

There are some pretty funny tourist complaints to be found on Trip Advisor too: like the one that was cross because there was no cafe on top of Ben Nevis!
