This song's getting tons of airtime on UK radio at the mo. I love it and hope it helps anyone realise that in time all troubles pass. OK - they are replaced with new ones but you can't win 'em all:-)

Enjoy.

DtG -

Thanks for the info. Glad to know she has a new CD.

About 11 years ago, I took a 6-year-old friend to see her idol perform in a local dinner/show setting. By chance we were seated near the manager of the venue. As my young friend was the only child there (and at quite a late hour), he asked me privately if she would like to meet Ms. Vega. We were led out a side door to a picnic area where the singer and her band were having supper.

Our host asked the little girl if she knew who "she" was. All color drained from the child's face, she muttered "Suzanne V..." and fainted into my arms. Of course we were all shocked but she quickly revived. Ms. Vega took her on her lap and hugged her. As we were going back inside, she asked which was the youngster's favorite song and, toward the end of the program, dedicated the song to her. The "little girl" is now a senior in high school and still talks about the experience.

Lovely story, Mary. Thanks. I have never met Ms. V but she always comes across as a caring and intelligent person. Certainly her song lyrics seem to reflect that.

The story seems to confirm it.

Best wishes to you and the 'little girl'.

BTW - my 'little girls' - now 16 - usualy end up in the first aid room when they go to see their heroes (Placebo). I guess it is something many never grow out of!

The song LAST YEAR'S TROUBLES comes from Suzanne Vega's album "Songs in Red and Gray" (2001).

I don't think her web site contains any lyrics or sound files for this song.

However, I think there are a couple of videos at YouTube.

I found these lyrics online and checked them against the video at YouTube:

LAST YEAR'S TROUBLES
Suzanne Vega

Last year's troubles
Last year's troubles

Last year's troubles are so old-fashioned:
The robber on the highway, the pirate on the seas.
Maybe it's the clothing that's so entertaining,
The earrings and the swashbuckling blouses that please.

Here we have heroes of times that have passed now.
Nobody these days has that kind of chin.
Over there the petticoats of ladies of virtue.
You can hardly tell them from the petticoats of sin

Last year's troubles
Last year's troubles

Look at all the waifs of Dickensian England.
Why is it their suffering is more picturesque?
Must be 'cause their rags are so very Victorian.
The ones here at home just don't give it their best,

Last year's troubles they shine up so prettily.
They gleam with a luster they don't have today.
Here it's just dirty and violent and troubling,
Et cetera.

Last year's troubles
Last year's troubles

Trouble is still trouble and evil's still evil.
Sometimes we wonder, is there more now or less?
If we had a tool or could tally the handfuls,
Measure for measure, it's the same, would be my guess.

Last year's troubles
