Several programs from my WFDU-FM series THE SUNDAY SESSION have been loaded here on Mudcat. (Thanks Max!)

One show is a tribute to Joe Heaney. I spoke with a number of his friends and fans - people like Peggy Seeger, Cathie Ryan, the Irish Voice's Don Meade, Josh Dunson, and Prof. Sean Williams among others. We shared Joe's music and painted a picture of his contribution's to the world of traditional music.

Also available for listening are shows with Sharon Shannon, Green Linnet's Wendy Newton, Johnny Hardie from Old Blind Dogs, and many others. Just click on "Radio" at the top of this screen and go to Sunday Session.

I hope you will enjoy them! Thanks!

I've always loved Joe Heaney's voice; his was a truly authentic sound. Some years back there was a documentary on Joe's life shown on TV, "Sing the Dark Away", can't remember who made it. Its good to hear that he hasn't been forgotten by mudcatters.

Listening now. Thanks, Ron! I have the Road from Connemara CD set, and Say A Song. Can't get enough of Joe Heaney. Can I link to this show from my website?

CHRIS J: We meet again! I seem to be falling on all the threads with yourself in them. 'Sing the Dark Away' was made by Irish Television, RTE. Not too sure on the actual documentary maker, or the poet from whom the title line was taken. If you look at their site http://www.rte.ie/ there's a music & a merchandise section where somebody should be able to answer. Good docu it was too - although how could you fail to make such a life interesting! Thanks to Ron also!

cheers

Sorry - it's a commercial TV Station - not a discussion board or anything - but the guy/gal at the end of the E-Mail contact that looks after the music they sell (mostly traditional Irish) would most likely know the documentary & if it's available from anyone. As I'm unable to manage those blue thingeys, all I can do is type their main address again - copy and paste it to where the URLs go at the top: http://www.rte.ie/ then you'll have to look for the music/merchandise section.

cheers

Hi, Ron, I have a website with folk music links, my illustration portfolio, and a store of Irish imports, as well as a page at mp3.com with my singing. I added a link to your show about 1/4 way down the page of recordings that includes Joe Heaney Music Imports. I will also add it to my Traditional music links page, where I have other links about sean nos and Joe Heaney, and my Alice Flynn mp3 page.

GREAT SHOW! I am listening to it for the second time this morning. Joe Heaney keeps me inspired to continue singing unaccompanied songs. Back when we first started the Mudcat theme song thread, I did a song about Mudcat to the tune of Rocks of Bawn (listening to Joe singing Rocks of Bawn now, at the end of the program).

Lovely show, Ron. I missed this one and am very pleased to hear it now. I've been very lucky to be in intimate contact with Scottish ballad singing for decades but have always felt a great disappointment that Irish ballad singing just wasn't available - not so's you could find it, anyway. I soon became very tired of hearing Irish groups singing Scottish songs with bouncy California accompaniment! Heaney was brilliant and I've had the recent pleasant impression that sean nos singing is slowly having a significant rebirth.

Abby,

Thank you!

You are right about sean nos having a rebirth. I think it is also having an influence on artists that aren't strict "by the book" sean nos singers, such as Cathie Ryan. Cathie was lucky to have learned directly from Joe and his influence is so evident in her music. Sean nos is so much more than just the way a song is sung, it is really learning the song and putting forth the feeling behind the words.

I'm so glad that everyone liked this show. I feel it is important that more people, especially those not involved with Irish music, learn of Joe's story and his approach to music. It is a lesson for anyone interested in folk music of any kind!

Ron
