It is in the Levy Collection. With no chords, but with piano arrangement.

Thanks, Masato, for taking the time to scan all that for me. It confirms I have the right melody. I wish I could figure out the chords for it!

"Somewhere the guerdon won" - well, that's a word you don't see everyday. But since it means reward it's correct enough. A confusing line though. I bet the author was using a rhyming dictionary.

Well, Singout, if you print that from Levy and ask a piano player what the chords are, that should do it.

The images from the Historic American Sheet Music are clearer. MIDI and information are given by The CyberHymnal. The printed sheet music is in Robert A Fremont, ed., Favorite Songs of the Nineties (Dover, pp. 11-14).

If you have a MIDI with accompaniment, my program MIDI chords will tell you what chords are being played, and can even simplify the complicated ones. You can buy it from Hands-on MIDI software - it doesn't cost much, and there is a free demo to download.

Forgot to say it can also transpose the chords into any key. And I have written a shareware program which will transpose the actual MIDI.

Beautiful Isle of Somewhere

A                   E
Somewhere the sun is shining,
                        A
Somewhere the songbirds dwell;
                         E
Hush, then, thy sad repining,
B7                   E7
God lives, and all is well.

Chorus:
A          E7
Somewhere, somewhere,
F#m               E7
Beautiful Isle of Somewhere!
A          E             A7    D
Land of the true, where we live anew,
A                E7   A
Beautiful Isle of Somewhere!

Somewhere the day is longer,
Somewhere the task is done;
Somewhere the heart is stronger,
Somewhere the guerdon won.

Chorus

Somewhere the load is lifted,
Close by an open door;
Somewhere the clouds are rifted,
Somewhere the angels sing.

Chorus

My father wants played at his funeral Beautiful Isle of Somewhere, played on Cornet or trumpet - he is now 85 and not destined much longer for this world.

Wartime memories of a huge battle in El Alamein when, one night at dusk, all dropped quiet as a solo cornet could be heard bringing the battlefield to a contemplative halt. Where can I find a cornet recording please?-

The correct lyrics for verse 3, from the sheet music at the Levy collection:

Somewhere the load is lifted,
Close by an open gate;
Somewhere the clouds are rifted,
Somewhere the angels wait.
