Hey Ossama you son of a bitch here is your swan song; to the tune 'Fernando' by ABBA patriotic lyric by Don Hakman
.
.
.
.

Can you hear the bombs, ossamo?
You remember long ago
Another starry night like this
In the cavelight, ossamo
You were humming to yourself
And softly strumming your Qatar
You could hear the distant bombs
And sounds of musslim calls were coming from afar

They were closer now, ossamo
Every hour, every minute seemed to last eternally
You were so afraid, ossamo
We were young and full of life
And all of us prepared to die
And I'm not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and bombers almost made me cry

There was something in the air that night
The stars and stripes, ossamo
They were flying here for you and me
For liberty, osaamo
Though you never thought that you could lose
There's no regret
If we had to do the same again
We would, my friends, oh you know
If we had to do the same again
We would, my friends, don't you know

Now you're cold and dead, ossamo
Since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hands
Can you hear the bombs, ossamo?
Do you still recall the fateful night
We crossed Afghanistan?
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for tryanny in this
land

There was something in the air that night
The stars and stripes, ossamo
They were flying there for you and me
For liberty, ossamo
Though you never thought that you could lose
There's no regret
If I had to the same again
I would, my fiend, ossamo

There was something in the air that night
The stars and stripes, ossamo
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, ossamo
Though you never thought that you could lose
And now you're DEAD
If we had to do the same again
We would, my friends, oh you know
Yes, if we had to do the same again
We would, my friends , oh you know

If We had to do the same again
We would, my friends, don't you know

Although my personal taste is Pete Seeger and I find Greenwood patriotic songs insipid and maudlin I thought a patriotic song on the cusp of this disaster would be an interesting experiment. The 1st version was done from the perspective of the terrorist but would have caused the singer to be booed or worse.

I did anotherone below , trying to walk the tightrope of anti war and patriotism . Feedback would be helpful.

In the early morning hours, there were ghosts up in the sky. In a land that loved its freedom, and the towers that stood high . In the early morning hours with enemies on their way, we had no decent warning, on that clear September day

They loved their God and aimed the planes for the wrath their god had wrought. A man with a black beard, said "you deserve just what you got" Enemies attacked NY ...with AIRPLANES, FUEL AND KNIVES . They did not care who they killed, children men or wives.

We saw girls holding hands. And we watched them as they fell. We saw Arab children dancing from lessons learned in hell . After all the God Damn wars , for some God that is above, The musslims and their great god say it is just their righteous love.

The heros at ground zero were soaked in blood and guts. If you think we can just leave it you are sadly ****in nuts. Wisdom and compassion's out, some say we've all agreed. If it is a god we fight, lets see if he can bleed.

The terrorists were here, and we scarcely gave a glance. While in their hearts and minds was Allah's violence. The love of God had promised, that you'll change the course of time. The depth and horror of your hate, was to us, the greatest crime.

Somewhere tonight, there is the man who plots his sacred war. Plots the deaths, plots the costs and how to even the score. It is not for God , it is not for love but for a family he has lost. The war he wants at his request is another holocaust.

When every war is terror, when everyone's in error A voice must arise in you , that nothing here is fair Shall we try and kill them all? Shall we all just die and rot? Should we fire all our missles and give them all weve got?

Now its an eye for an eye, There is a scar in the sky. There is the shock and horror, for all families that cried. We'll find a way, to teach you, you will learn or you will die. We must find a way to reach you, It takes all of us to try

Its not us that oppress you ,its the evil men that hide. Its not god that hates freedom, its a bearded man that lied. Its not vengence for our family or 2 buildings that were tall. Its for peace and love and liberty and justice for us all.

Donuel, how about creating your own thread and there you can post all your songs. This is getting a tad tiresome. JMO

I second your suggestion Ebbie. It is tiresome and disheartening to those of us who would like a more multi-dimensional discussionin our threads.

Well thats exactly what I decided upon here. I can see how seeing the willy nilly step by step evolution of a song could be tiresome. Some mudcat veterans have seen supportive in steering me toward accepted customs which can be daunting at first. Thank you for your understanding. Patriotic songs are not my baillywick . The onion had a great piece on asking songwriters and singers to please refrain from war songs.

So far there is a request for airplay for the Ossama parody. Thats cool

What is tiresome is to see the same old problem - someone posting in a thread they don't like, just to say they don't like it.

Live and let live... a philosophy obviously not followed by that Bin Liner chap...

Page after page and line after line Of dreary cliche and dubious rhyme. And saccharine sentiment hyped even sweeter, And lines that utterly fail to achieve even a semblance of meter.

Words are misused till their battered and bruised. WHere subtlety's called for, a slegehammer's used. Points made and remade and run into the ground Like a word that's repeated till it's simply a sound.

The writers so busy at being distraught, Fail to observe what writing has wrought: An inferior dearth of good writerly feats Like interior rhyme or anapest beats.

Philosophical insights are scattered and few Platitudinous thoughts of Hallmarkian hue: Hate begets hate! Love conquers all! Time to unite Our country stands tall!

Weep for the dead! Hail to the chief! God I'm so sad! How great is my grief! When you have so much to say, well, there's no point in dwelling On grammer or stucture or syntax or spellng

Those not busy misquoting Melville or Kipling Were quoting instead their own little stripling Who uttered at dinnertime some gooey notion Dad thinks is some magical peace-on-earth potion

There's no peace to be had,I fear, not for a while, Not much stuff in the news to make a gal smile. So why am I finding in reading your rhymes, A strange assurance in very bad times?

Maybe it's this: That people laid low Terrorized by an implacable foe Who is driven to kill with manical zeal- How do they react? They say what they feel.

What they feel is not hatred, not an urge to kill more, Theirs is not a rhetorical drumbeat for war. No road to revenge that others have trod What they feel is a trust in the goodness of God.

And a deep aching pain for the vast loss of lives Of people who could be their husbands or wives. Here's the powerful part of the frailest of poems: The highjacked airline hit all of our homes.

Poems are not all that simple to grade. It's not the skill with which tey are made. As their feelins get truer, their quality mounts. Trust Mr. Hallmark: It's the thought that counts.

So everyone out there who gave their utmost You'll still find no poems in the Washington Post. But reading your work really gave me a lift. Thanks for your honesty, Thanks for the gift.

Anthrax is easy cuz its cured with Cipro and not contagious like the uncommon cold.

I went to work, and like a jerk, I used the water fountain and got somthin on my shirt and in a letter, I opened, I really should know better, but Ed McMann just said I'd won I'm wonderin where its from ... (chorus)

I came home ,I used the phone, I called my doc in quarantine and asked him for some pills and in the bathroom, later, I used some toilet paper and I've got a sore not there before I'm wondrin where its from. (chorus)

I watched the news, took off my shoes, I took a shower for an hour then I went to bed but in my dreams, I screamed , and then woke up Irene , then told her to beware the air I don't know where its from (chorus)

In the morning, I got changed, I went to town and bought some stuff and then I took the train I ate a burger, a soda, and crap I shouldnt oughta cuz now I got the anthrax and I'm wondrin where its from...

egad, your stuff is well suited for that miscreant Imus.

I rather like my songs since they have musical merit as well as satire.

Combining ossam with a Christmas carol is too droll for me.

Sorry, sick sense of humor. Tune is Yesterday.

Aaaaan-thrax
Didn't even stop to get the facts
Got my Cipro from some willing quacks
Oh, I'm scared I've got aaan-thrax

Bubonic plague
A groinal lump above my left-most layg
Although to you, my symptoms seem quite vague
I'm sure I've got bubonic plage

War bio-logical
Makes a dull life seem quite good
People point and stare
At what I wear -
A gas mask with a hood

Oh-oh-oh
A pox that's small
I've had a few, but haven't had them all
Give me a big one, or none at all
Oh, I don't want a pox that's small

Well, after seeing this thread I think we really have to go back to the subtle and insightful people like Paxton/Chapin/McCutcheon/Donahoe/etc;

Their music and thoughts will last a long time. The shame is that it took this horrendous event to bring about their wonderful poetry.
