I'd like to hear some information, stories, whatever, about Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen, whom I am looking forward to going to see/hear tomorrow night in Levittown, PA. They're one of those singer/songwriter teams who have been on the limits of my awareness - I knew he wrote 'Darcy Farrow', one of my favorite Ian and Sylvia songs - and then just recently heard their version of Ochs' The Highwayman - great stuff! So how 'bout some background info from the friendly Mudcat bunch? Don

Well, here's a place to start.

(I hope the old way of making clickies still works, 'cause I don't quite understand the new one.)

Peter.

Oh, to heek with it...

She was a childand he was a hood !!!

Truth is that they are simply THE BEST.

Cindy is a folksinger who does it right ! She has unerring taste in picking songs that depict the beautiful, scary, tragic, funny, occult, sad, macabre and just about all other emotional aspects of human experience. Her treatment of the big ballads is unsurpassed, as are her humorous more off-the wall offerings. That said, her VOICE is mellow and wonderful to the enth degree.   "That's vague", you say?!! Well, when you listen to Cindy Mangsen, you will hear precisely what I think it means to be a great folk communicator --- a vehicle for real folksongs telling real folks' stories of other eras right here and now in these modern and strange times we find ourselves in. Together with her husband Steve Gilllette, they are simply the perfect duo for these schizoid times where singer/songwriters and exponents of "the trad side" (like me)often spar with each other rather than blend perfectly and accommodatingly ---like Cindy and Steve. Theie performances are just grand.

Steve is a songwriter of wonderful compositions, both by himself and with collaborators. His songs have been recorded (I hate the word "covered") by many great artists from Don Williams to Linda Ronstadt and so many others. His guitar style is so complex that it is often perceived as not complex at all by those who don't know. That is testimony to his instrumental genius because his extremely tasteful picking NEVER gets in the way of the exceptional finely crafted lyrical stories that he tells in the songs. Steve was there in the beginning of the 60s when he recorded a brilliant album for Vanguard. When my old friend, Cindy, told me she was going to marry Steve Gillette, I stammered, "B-b-b-but, he's famous!!" That first album of Steve's was so great in my estimation that I still had him on a pedestal in my mind all those years later.

You are in for a treat.

Say "Hey" for me !

Steve is a GREAT guitar player. He fingerpicks using a flatpick for a thumbpick. I first saw him in the Village in the '60's. It took me ten years to master that technique. He is also one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Say "Hi!" for me.

"Genuinely nice people", I couldn't agree more. You will enjoy their performance.

If you want to hear a really neat song, ask Cindy to sing "Sunrise", and ask her to do it solo. She does a superb DADGAD accompaniment to the song that just blows me away.

I miss seeing them ....

The line about the "child-hood" sweethearts is one from one of the 3 songs I ever wrote that I bothered to learn. And it is a song I was proud to have Cindy record---called "That's The Ticket"   It's on Cindy's first album called LONG TIME TRAVELIN' (now on CD) And it's here in the D.T.

In truth, my wife, Carol, came up with the line---about me and her. I stole it. (But I've paid for it for 36 years ;-)
