Lyr Req: I'm too old to die young

I heard this song a couple of nights back but all I can remember is the hook line, which I presume is the title, so I'm hoping someone here might know it.

I should add that I've looked in the usual places and found a similar title by Peter Rowan but that's not it.(Although I did find "The free Mexican airforce" so it wasn't a wasted effort!

Subject: Lyr Add: TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG (Dan Bern)
From: S O P

Is it possibly: "TOO LATE TO DIE YOUNG" by Dan Bern:

The day the Elvis died
Was like a mercy killing
America breathed
A sigh of relief
We knew all about the drugs
And the Vegas shows
And there wasn't much of anything
That looked like grief

And I guess he shoulda done
Like James Dean did
'Stead of putting on weight
And sinking down, down, down
Easier to take
If he had just skidded straight
To souvenir city
And T-shirt town

And sometimes I wish
I was smarter that I am
But I'm on my 3rd city
And I'm on my 4th car
And I'm on my 5th apartment
And so many of my days have sprung

And now it's too late to crash
Too late to burn
Too late to die young

If Pete Rose had exploded
Like Roberto Clemente
He'd be hanging in the Hall of Fame
Without fail
Can you name the last good film
Marlon Brando made
While trying to keep his kid
From going to jail
And the old people
On the street are telling you
"Don't become like me"
But every day
You creep a little bit closer

And I guess we shoulda done
Like James Dean did
'Stead of putting on weight
And sinking down, down, down
Easier to take
If he had just skidded straight
To souvenir city
And T-shirt town

And sometimes I wish
I was smarter that I am
But I'm on my 3rd city
And I'm on my 4th car
And I'm on my 5th apartment
And so many of my days have sprung

And now it's too late to crash
Too late to burn
Too late to die young

This was on a thread recently about "songs that make you weep". I am almost certain that it is a Jim Eanes song, but I have no way to play the LP right now.

Thanks SOP but that's not it. I'll try a look at Jim Eanes.

Here is a link (if I do it right) to the CD on All Music Guide:

Subject: Lyr Add: TILL I'M TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG (Welch/...)
From: GUEST,Dale

This bothered the heck out of me, because I had heard it recently, but could not place it. Finally found it (unattributed) on a recording I had gotten from a Canadian radio station. It sounded like a gospel flavored choral group, but according to one source I found, it seems to have been written by Kevin Welch, John Hadley, & Scott Dooley. Hope this is the one, transcribed from the recording. Nice tuneful song.

TILL I'M TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG
Kevin Welch, John Hadley, & Scott Dooley

If life is like a candle bright
Death must be the wind
You can close your window tight
But it still comes blowing in

So I will climb the highest hill
And watch the rising sun
And I pray that I don't feel the chill
'Til I'm too old to die young

Let me watch my children grow
To see what they become
Oh, Lord, don't let that cold wind blow
'Til I'm too old to die young

Now I have had some dear sweet friends
I thought would never die
Now the only thing that's left of them
Is a teardrop in my eye

If I could have one wish today
And know it would be done
Then I would say everyone could stay
'Til they're too old to die young

Let me watch my children grow
To see what they become
Oh, Lord, don't let that cold wind blow
'Til I'm too old to die young (repeat)

Subject: Lyr Add: WHO WOULDA THUNK IT? (Greg Brown)
From: open mike

Greg Brown has this line in the last verse of this song: "It's too late to die young."

WHO WOULDA THUNK IT?

We used to say, "I could walk all night," and we could and we did,
Down that gravel road, to that tiny town, and the door always opened.
Now we say, "I could walk all night." It's not true.
We can't walk all night, no, because we don't want to.
We want a bed and a blanket, some light breakfast, sometime tomorrow.
We want a bed and a blanket, some light breakfast, sometime tomorrow.
And I sing it now: "Hey-hey, hey-hey, who woulda thunk it?
Hey-hey, hey-hey, who woulda thunk it?"

We used to say, "I could eat a horse," and we could and we did,
In fast food joints in the middle of someplace on the way to someplace else.
Now we say, "I could eat a horse." It's not true.
We can't eat a horse, no, because we don't want to.
We want somethin' from the cookbook, that new one with the great graphics,
Somethin' from the cookbook, that new one with the great graphics.
Oh and I sing it now: "Hey-hey, hey-hey, who woulda thunk it?
Hey-hey, hey-hey, who woulda thunk it?"

We used to say, "I don't care if I never have any money,
As long as I have my sweet honey and a shack in the woodland."
Now we say, "I don't care if I don't have money," but it's not true.
We can't live without money, no, because we don't want to.
We want one of those and two of those, and oh, that one looks neat.
Wrap it up. Put it on my MasterCard. Put it on my Visa.
And I sing it now: "Hey-hey, hey-hey, who woulda thunk it?
Hey-hey, hey-hey, who woulda thunk it?
Hey-hey, hey-hey, hey-hey, hey-hey now, who woulda thunk it?"

We used to say, "I don't care if I never grow old.
I'm gonna flame, gonna burn, take one quick turn,
And be gone like James Dean." Now we don't say that.
It's too late to die young,
So we sit at the table long after supper and a good wine.
Here's what we sing. We go, "Hey-hey, hey-hey, who woulda thunk it?
Hey-hey, hey-hey, who woulda thunk it?"

looking at thoses lyrics again and i think the words in the first verse
have always sounded more like "something like breakfast, sometime tomorrow"
I think i remember hearing another song that says
"it is too late to die young and leave a beautiful corpse..."
or something like that....
did we find the one you were looking for yet?

Good songs but still not the one I heard the other night. If I could just recall a few of the lyrics it might get someone started.
The problem is I was out celebrating with my brother (his 50th) and had a few drinks on board. I'll see if big brother can remember any of the lines and get them back here.
Thanks all.

Well big-brother wasn't much help other than that the song was from an obscure show or musical.
One tiny snatch of the lyrics came to me....
"......................strangers in the street,
sleep with everyone I meet,"

and something about getting drunk and doing junk...

It's a long shot but somebody, somewhere, must know this song.

I found it!
It's a Murray Grand composition being performed here by Ruth Canal.
Although it cuts off after the third verse, I can at least buy the CD to get the rest.
Thanks for your efforts,
C-flat.

Well, it wouldn't hurt to post what we have so far, would it?

Transcribed from the sound sample that C-flat provided the link to, above:

TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG
Murray Grand

Let me run in front of trucks, smash the mirrors on my walls,
Let me puff away and choke, sniff a little coke, and have myself a ball.
What the hell! I'm too old to die young.
Let me walk against the lights. Let me drive while I am drunk.
Let me be a little hip, take a little trip, and try a little junk.
After all, I'm too old to die young.

Let me pick up strangers in the street,
Sleep with ev'ryone I meet,
Sleep in dives along the docks, vodka on the rocks.
Let me stay at Michael Stone's. (?)
Who's to know? Who's to care?
Let me have another thrill, pop another pill, and breathe polluted air.
What's the diff when your spring has been sprung?
After all, I'm way too old to die young.

Let me wear...

[This has been recorded by Claiborne Cary, Trudi Mann, and Ruth Canal.]

Let my face begin to fall
let it wrinkle like a prune
well I know my liver's gone, when I'm lying on the floor of some saloon
Give me speed, give me hash,
let me fly, let me crash,
drop the bomb on my head,
not a word will be said,
not a moan, not a sigh,
as I kiss my assets goodbye,
after all I'm too old to die young.
