Lyr Req: Stand Firm (Leon Rosselson)

Given that the British government is to issue a leaflet telling us all what to do in the event of a terrorist attack.   Can anyone remember the words of this song about what to do in the event of a nuclear warning, which was written about the Protect & Survive leaflet. I think that this is the title and I think it was by Leon Rossolson. (God my spelling's bad)

Don't just cower like a shower when the bombs begin to loom. Stand firm, Stand firm
There will be a good four minutes to prepare your refuge room. Stand firm, Stand firm
For an early warning system will be broadcasting the news
So don't hang about Trafalgar Square or sprawl about the loos
And switch off all electric fires so as not to blow a fuse. And stand firm, stand firm

You will leave your bingo sessions, push aside your plate of chips. Stand firm, Stand firm
Pull your socks up, push your chest out and button up your lips. Stand firm, Stand firm
When you've switched off all your telly's and abandoned all your beer
Consult your local warden he will help allay your fear
And to deaden the explosion stick your fingers in your ear and stand firm, stand firm

For your children and their children and their children's children's sake. Stand firm, stand firm
There are all sorts of precautions that we all of us can take. Stand firm, stand firm
To show to the aggressor that the free man shall be free
Jump down into your hidey-hole make pots and pots of tea
And if you're caught out in the open just duck behind a tree But Stand firm, stand firm

Now a slit trench will protect you from the fallout and the blast, Stand firm, stand firm
But don't come out of hiding till the radiation's past, Stand firm, stand firm
With that sterling British grit that brought us through two world wars
We can whitewash all our windows and sandbag all our doors
And check our Geiger counter in our new brown paper drawers. And Stand firm, stand firm

So don't just cower like a shower when the bombs begin to burst. Stand firm, stand firm
There will be no need for panic if the worst comes to the worst. Stand firm, stand firm
We can make our contributions if we only keep our head
Try sweeping up the fallout or decontaminating bread
Or if it's rescuing survivors or burying the dead . Stand firm, stand firm.

Would love a tune/chords for this thanks. We can't pass on things to the younger ones well without them... :-)

Any information on the songwriter, Bill? Was it Rosselson?

It's in his 1968 songbook 'Look Here' published by Harmony music, Also 'Bringing the News From Nowhere' (1992) published by Fuse Records and available from himself, I would think at - 28 Park Chase, Wembley Park, Middlesex, HA9 8EH.

Try to find 'A Laugh a Song and a Hand Grenade' well worth the look.

Here are the lyrics from Bringing the News from Nowhere, which are just a bit different from those that Bill SDables posted. The book doesn't have an alphabetical index, so sometimes my weary eyes miss things.

    Stand Firm
    (Leon Rosselson)

Don't cower like a shower when the clouds begin to loom,
    STAND FIRM! STAND FIRM!
You will have a good four minutes to prepare your refuge room,
    STAND FIRM! STAND FIRM!
For our Early Warning System will be broadcasting the news
So don't sprawl around Trafalgar Square or lounge about the loos.
(And switch off all electric fires sos not to blow a fuse)
    STAND FIRM! STAND FIRM!

You will leave your bingo sessions, push aside your plates of chips,
    STAND FIRM!
Pull your socks up, jut your chins out and button up your lips,
    STAND FIRM!
When you've turned off all your tellies and abandoned all your beers,
Consult your local warden who will help allay your fears,
(To deaden the explosion, put your fingers in your ears)
    STAND FIRM!

A slit trench will protect you from the fallout and the blast,
    STAND FIRM!
And don't emerge from hiding while the radiation lasts,
    STAND FIRM!
To prove to the aggressor that free men will be free,
Crouch down in your hidey-holes, make lots of pots of tea,
(If you're caught out in the open, duck behind a tree).
    STAND FIRM!

So don't huddle in the rubble when the bombs begin to burst,
    STAND FIRM!
There will be no need to panic; if the worst comes to the worst,
    STAND FIRM!
You can make your contribution if you only keep your head, Try sweeping up the fallout, decontaminate the bread, But whether rescuing survivors or burying the dead,
    STAND FIRM!

Makes me think of the UK Emergencies Leaflet thread.

Cheers all. Will we need a new song when the next leaflet cones out?
