Nut Sauce, Anyone?

Anyone who knows me, will know that I have a penchant for breaking strings no matter the gauge. Anyone who knows me will know also that I travel in Quixotish quest, in search of the 'unbreakable string', the '5 year warranty bridge'. These self-same people will therefore, be acutely aware that when I shout 'Eureka' at the top of my voice, a lightbulb of sorts must have just appeared above my head.

The sales clerk in Knud Eskildsen's Music Shop in Esbjerg, Denmark, to whom I uttered that word, had never laid eyes on me in his life...

I spotted a package behind the counter, up where the sets of strings are kept. I couldn't make out the trademark logo, from where I was standing, but written in large friendly letters beside it, were the words 'Nut Sauce'.
"What's that stuff?", I asked
"Stops you breaking strings" (chatty bloke!)
"I'll have one of them as well, then.... Big Bends Nut Sauce, eh? Do you have to buy your own rice for that?"
"Wha'?"
"Nothin'. Thanks. See ya later"

Off I went with my 6 E's, 6 A's, 12 D's, 12 G's, 6 B's, and 6 high E's, (not to mention, my nut sauce) for another half-hour of string changing.
Open the package, and take out the instruction leaflet...
Written in small, hard-to-read letters near the end of the text, are the words "This is not a food"

"Great start", I thought

Not in the common sense of the word is it a food, no. To say that it lengthens the life of a bottom E, way past 'normal' breaking point, until it is utterly flaccid, would be to endow the 'sauce' with some sustaining qualities, though, and since I bought my first tube in early June, my G's and D's (especially these two) tend to last the proprietary two night's playing that I like to get out of them and the other strings.
Not only did I get that (I noticed the difference the first night), but since June, I could count on the fingers of my two hands, how many strings I have broken in the course of a gig.
To me, that is nearly a 100% success rate.....

I went back to the shop 3 days later, to stock up on spares and plecs, and as I approached the engaging clerk at the counter, I boldly bellowed that immortal word, thanked him profusely for his propensity for breathing, and grabbing him warmly by the hand, started to explain to him what a very seminal moment in the history of traditional guitar playing, he was bearing testament to...

In short, I go around these days with a tube of it in my right hand, ready to pounce on unsuspecting oath swearers, just waiting for an opportunity....

Our Brothers and Sisters, Stateside may have experienced the wonders of 'Big Bends Nut Sauce' already, (although I saw no sign of it a few years ago, when I was last there) so to a certain degree I may be preaching to the converted, but I have never seen it before in any music shops in Scandinavia.
Only in a little place, in a smallish town, on the west coast of Denmark....

if you are only getting two nights out of your strings..
perhaps there is something else the matter..
a bur in the saddle? causes bucking horses and
breaking strings...maybe more than lube is required.

Dang, Brency -- two nights! Sheeesh!

Years ago, I used to play on the street, 8-10 hours at a stretch on weekends, and only broke 2-3 strings per week (i.e., per 40 hours of performance, not counting woodshedding, partying, etc.). Plus which, I've always used picks (two metal fingerpicks plus a plastic thumbpick) and played hard enough to scratch the bejeesus out of my guitar -- not at all easy on the strings. I've always used bronze medium-guage, admittedly not the most fragile.

But two nights out of your two middle strings (G and D)? You must *really* be pounding the crap out of that poor gitfiddle!

Hiya kat! Good to 'see' you too.

I change my strings every 2 nights, whether I need to or not, as it were. The guitar in question, a limited edition Washburn, (which, incidentally, has been called a 'sound engineer's dream')I have had re-customised to suit the '60s to 17s that I put on it (It is tuned to DAGDAD permanently...)

But my point is that this stuff HAS changed my breakage rate. The angle that my strings hit the bridge at, is <5° (thanks to the tailpiece that the strings emanate from), and the sound is deep and full-bodied.
Of course the Phosphor Bronze wound will bugger up the bridge eventually, and of course, as every chord that is played on the thing is some variation of a 'power chord' in the first place, the strings will eventually give way (hence the reason for my Quixotish quest in the first place...)
When I first bought the guitar, it was the bridge that used to break (I kid you not!), and I went around chasing my tail for a couple of months, switching to bone bridges, then plastic again, then lighter strings (I even tried Nickel [spit spit!] strings for a while).
Then I met a luthier who was clever and innovative (who has since moved to Japan). Ones I have been talking to since, just scratch their heads, and tell me things I have been hearing for 10 years, that have been tried and tested, before the idea would get eventually knocked on the head.

I have had to take other precautions in the meantime. When your'e playing a set of reels, for example, it would not be unusual for instruments to drop out and come back in again. I can whack a broken string off, and a new one on and tuned in 20 seconds or less. If I'm doing a solo gig, I can switch guitars and do something else, if I don't want to 'talk over' the string change.

All of this is no more!
Well, almost no more.

Seriously folks, I have had the head scratched off myself for years, trying to have my cake and being able to eat it as well (as far as the guitar is concerned), and not being one to be easily impressed, I do actually have to take my hat off to the stuff.

Try it and see....

I tend to hammer the hell out of my poor guitar, but only break strings very rarely. Wonder why that is? My problem is that i hammer it so much, i drop my plectrum and then my fingers get all cut up from playing without it...

I empathise with you, Brendy. Round these parts I'm known as Scissorhands. Will maybe give the stuff a try! I used to have a beautiful old Takamine, made a wonderful sound, but after numerous setup changes I just couldn't stop the bloody strings breaking, sometimes at the most inopportune moments. I sold it and bought a new Yamaha, doesn't sound anywhere near as good but the string wear seems to be a lot better.
