The Steamer
(Next to the Market)
Fleetwood
Lancashire
UK

11th & 18th April 2006
11.30am to 2.30pm

PENNY BLACK & FRIENDS

Penny Black will be performing for ARC (Arthritis Research Campaign) on 11th & 18th April 2006 to hopefully raise much needed cash.

They will perform their usual Lancashire, Comedy songs and poems and there will be a bucket collection for A.R.C.

The events have proven extremely successful over the last few years and once again the Steamer Pub has invited Penny Black to continue the regular Tuesday Lunchtime concerts throughout the 2006 season (from the end of May 2006 until the end of the illuminations (early November)).

As an added aid to the fund raising and for those who would like to help but cannot get to the concerts, an online collection service has been instigated, that providing the person giving is a British Tax payer, tax will be reclaimed - meaning ARC will received £12 for every £10 donated!

Visit Penny Penny Black's Website for more details or http://www.justgiving.com/PennyBlack.

Of course even if you're not a British Tax payer donations will be gratefully received but won't attract the "Added Bonus".

Come along, have a fun time and help A.R.C. as well!

all the very best
Is Ken Nicol at Fylde again this year? His seminar last year was brilliant. life changing stuff.
some mates of mine no fixed abode are booked _ i may go and see them.
I'm over in Blackpool as a carer on AC holiday in September. I hope we see each other.

How's the variax going?

I have got a bigger PA (Mackie 450's) - using it for the 1st time tonight, and hoping that I will be able to use just ordinary guitars as they seem to suit me better. although the variax can cut through any noise.

all the best Pete

A.R.C. (Arthritis Research Campaign)

Ep'Eric, I bet Arthritis has though! now we did put an explanation in the first entry for you foreigners ;0) so as a penance go to http://www.justgiving.com/PennyBlack and make a donation, only joking, but if you would like to find out more the ARC website is: http://www.arc.org.uk/.

Al hi mate long time no chat, Vax is going like a good 'un - still confusing Bill, he can't understand how I can play a different chord to the one coming out the P.A. ( Vax In Action)

Not sure if Ken is across - haven't a brochure to hand at the moment, but I'll check and let you know.

We put a pair of Mackie 450's through their paces when we were up at the Edinburgh fringe last year - very impressed and use Mackies for Fold-back (you may remember).

Hopefully see you soon and if you can get over for The Steamer collections you know we'd love you to do a "spot" - means we can get to the bar :0)

I can associate with that. In the last 3 years I have got arthritus in the knees and it is slowly geting worse.

Stopped playing golf/going for long walks/ doing the usual things you would do with your children/No gardening/ diffculty climbing up and down stairs/problems with doing the housework/not being able to do a simple job like stacking shelves in a supermarket and so on and so forth.

It really is depressing.

Hope it goes well :-)

Thanks for the good wishes Villan - sorry about your condition, Mum was house bound from her mid 30s with it - I can no longer hold a plectrum without the aid of various contraptions and "Gorilla Snot" so mainly finger pick nowadays! - OK when I'm playing banjo ;0)

We've managed to raise over £8,000.00 since Gordon started us off with "Make music Live" two and a half years ago - and as long as we can keep doing it we will, with help from fellow musicians (such a fellow Mudcatter Big Al Whittle and many more local players) and the visitors and staff at the venues we play at.

take care

just on a happier note - John's wife who has been suffering for years with arthritis in the knees has just (over the last 12 month) had both knees replaced and is getting around great - no pain and mobility is nearly back to normal, things can get better.

I am nowhere near that stage yet, but even in its early stages it seems to affect you quite drastically. It doesn't stop you doing things, but if you have always enjoyed the sporting life, then not being able to do things like long distance walking etc, alters your life dramatically. I suppose most people get used to not being able to do these things that other people take for granted.

When I look back and think of the things I used to do on the sport/social side it makes you realise what you don't have the capabilty to do anymore.

Cricket/Football/Squash/Golf/Long Distance Walking/Runnning/Badminton/Rock Climbing/Dancing/even the silly little things like Snooker and Darts.

Ah well mustn't grumble. There are a lot more people with much worse situations :-)

If she's got to bi-lateral knees operation stage, she will have gone through hell - and that operation is very soul of liberation.

I can think of no more moving event in my life than the when i took my wife to the toilet , just after that operation and she stood unaided for the first time in ten years. It was a moment absolutely beyond tears.

Advances like that operation are only possible because of groups like ARC and the wonderful people like yourself who fundraise. There 200 different kinds of arthritis, and 50% of population will get it sometime in their lives. The government spends no money on arthritis.

Im not sure there is a god. And what he could be thinking of when he unleashed arthritis on humanity, I don't know. he deserves a punch in the nose for that one, rather than praise. However if there if there is a god.

God bless you and your friends for your work, Pete.

Lynda (Bond) Johns Wife had them in May and November 2005, she had to work very hard with the exercises, both times, but the results have been fantastic.

I'll give a plug as well to her specialist Mr Sampath, one of the best.

You can read more about the operation, his computer aided surgery on his site, (click his name in previous sentence).

You can also read life changing messages from his patients (including Lynda) Here.

Cheers Al, but as we always say, we do little but go and have some fun sing a few songs and meet a lot of nice people - it's those nice people that put money in the bucket and make Donation Online that are really the ones to be thanked along with all the hard work and research A.R.C. do, without as you say any Government support!

Lot of good info there. Thanks for that. Looks like I am heading in that direction. Need to get the guts to go and do it. I will have to build my dermination up and do it. Sampath seems a very good specialist.

Well it's raining here in the Fylde - but it's nice and warm at The Steamer, The Kitchen's up and running, Plenty of Beer, Softdrinks etc and some music from 11.30. Why not pop along.

If you can't get along, why not donate the price of a pint online?

$4/£2 cheers!

Les,
Its a bit like the guy on the caravan site who buys a gas bottle.

he asks how long it will last and the man says, well if you don't use it - it will last forever.

they wouldn't do operatons on my wife before she was 40, they said the joints thay had then wouldn't last that long and they weren't confident of being able to replace them. so by the time they did the first hip -the femur has smashed a hole in the sacrum and it needed, all kinds of prosthesis.

Since then we know younger people who have had the surgery - so I guess they must be more confident about the length of time they will last and replacing them.

The point is though your artificial joint will last longer if you're not planning on doing marathons on it or playing football. By the time Denise got hers , it was just bloody fantatstic for her to be able to go shopping on her own. She still feels that way about the independence that two hip joints, two knee joints and two fused ankles have given her.

all the best

Hi Al
I can well imagine how Denise feels and what a lot she has had to go through. Incidentally it was nice to see her enjoying herself at the club last Friday.
I am not at that sort of level yet. I can do shopping etc, but pay the penaly afterwards.
I have private medical insurance which is a knock on from when I was self employed. I am glad I still have it, the way the crap national health is these days. Can't afford it, but can't afford to be without it.
Inge had her hip done a year ago, and it has chnged her life considerably. 49 at the time. Quite young really.
Cheers
Les
