21 Aug 06 - 10:05 AM (#1815089) Subject: Judy Cook in Maine September 7th. From: SINSULL Judy is returning to the US and appearing on Thursday, September 7th in a house concert at my place. For fellow Mudcatter's comments on Judy's tour of the UK: thread.cfm?threadid=78758&messages=24 Her website is here: http://www.judycook.net/ A modest evaluation from her home page: "Judy lifts the spirit and entertains with splendid traditional ballads and songs from a huge and varied Anglo-American repertoire. Her unaccompanied presentation and delivery are a great example to any singer, and combine with her joy of singing to delight all listeners." Hopefully, the last of the lobster fest will be gone by then. Who's in? Who needs a bed?

Judy and Dennis are salt of the earth people, as well as great singers. Judy has such a great repertoir. Someday I'll get them up here to the Finger Lakes. If someone can tell me how to shorten the distance between central New York and Maine, I would much appreciate it!! So many good people, good times, and great music opportunities. Actually, I'd probably just have to drive home Thu night. Judy has a great selection of songs, she weilds a pleasant, clear, strong voice and is very on-pitch*. She also exudes warmth and has a devastating sense of humor. I'd like to request the pig song right now. Barring disaster, I'm in. *This is me being a music nerd. Most people wouldn't make a big deal about it. I don't think I've ever heard her sing a bum note, and it's something most of us do at least occasionally. |

Looks like it might be just me coming up after work and heading off back to work the next morning. Judy knows more songs than anyone around -- and actually has her brain organized enough so she can remember them when she needs to! (Maybe Dennis keeps her random access memory from getting more and more random -- as mine is, sigh.) AND sings them well to boot! AND is fun to be around. (Oops, she's an "instigator" -- also has a very innocent expression when she wants. Get her together with Sinsull and Jacqui and, well, anything could happen.) Maybe Tom can make it, too, but I think we'd need to come in separate cars. Linn |

25 Aug 06 - 09:48 PM (#1819111) Subject: RE: Judy Cook in Maine September 7th. From: KathWestra Wish we could change the title of this thread to "Judy Cook in Maine September 7th and 9th"!!! For those of you who can't make the Thursday concert in South Portland, Judy will be heading up to Rockland, Maine, on Saturday, September 9, for a concert at the new Maine Lighthouse Museum, One Park Drive on the harbor in the center of town. She'll do a program called "Maid On the Shore"--songs and ballads of women and the sea. Admission to the concert is $15 and includes admission to the museum, which contains a quite wonderful collection of working first- and second-order Fresnel lighthouse lenses (which are all lighted when the museum is open), as well as other lighthouse artifacts. It's a great atmosphere for sea music and, in fact, Judy's concert is part of a new "Music and Lore of the Sea" series at the museum (once a month, on the second Saturday, year-round). Call me at (207) 594-6357 or PM me for more information. Kathy |

05 Sep 06 - 07:30 PM (#1827927) Subject: RE: Judy Cook in Maine September 7th. From: Ferrara I asked Judy if I could write a little here about Dennis' dad. He was truly a wonderful person and a fascinating character and we will certainly miss him. We've known him for over 20 years, mostly seeing him once a year at Thanksgiving. Mr. Cook added a lot to everyone's enjoyment. His enthusiasm for life and his wide range of interests were fascinating. He used to teach our kid simple magic tricks, which of course Darriel loved. One year he put on a full magic show, with props. Another time, I brought sheet music for golden oldies (30's and 40's) and we had a nice sing-along which he really enjoyed. The Thanksgiving football games were his passion and nothing was allowed to interfere with them. He had been living in a retirement home for about 10 years. He had so much warmth, and such an outgoing personality, that almost everyone there was his friend. He had been a machinist and had an incredible grasp of mechanical things; he was a real Mr. Fix-It. His expertise was much in demand at the retirement home; as Judy says, he fixed everything from earrings to coffee tables for his fellow residents and was delighted to find that his skills were so popular. A lovely man. |

05 Sep 06 - 09:41 PM (#1828032) Subject: RE: CANCELLED Judy Cook in Maine September 7th. From: GUEST,Art Thieme Dennis and Judy, Carol and I are so sorry. I'll be in touch! Art Folks, Dennis Cook heard me say, at a folk festival a few years ago, that I had a slew of my old performances on cassettes. Well, he took the ball and ran with it. The result is my latest CD with Folk Legacy. He is the best. And I'm thinking now that I heard he was the one who started the Digital Tradition here at the Mudcat Cafe. I could be wrong, but I don't think so. Art |

05 Sep 06 - 10:18 PM (#1828058) Subject: RE: CANCELLED Judy Cook in Maine September 7th. From: Bill D Well, it was Dennis who, along with Susan of DT, cooked (no pun intended) up the idea of sharing song notebooks digitally. I still have a couple of the disks that were passed about before it went online. Needless to say, the idea took off. Dennis didn't 'create' the online DT, (Dick G. and Susan of DT did) but many of his original files are in there. To add a bit....Dennis' dad was not only a genuinely clever guy, and a wonderfully congenial person to visit with, but kinda self-effacing also. He let what he made and fixed speak for him. I knew him for a number of years before I realized what a talented man he was. He built an entire miniature amusement park run by tiny pulleys, wires, motors...etc...that fit on a table top.....and, I learned from a casual remark several years ago that he had been AT Eniwetok (the first hydrogen bomb test) He worked for a contractor who installed and tested monitoring equipment....and it was a good idea at dinner to be aware of his taste in pie....he had a FINE sense of the best dessert! I shall miss him, (and I'm sure Judy will re-schedule this concert sometime in the future.) |
