Hot Hot Hot Song List (songs about fire)

05 Dec 06 - 06:54 AM (#1900379)
Subject: Hot Hot Hot Song List
From: Azizi

Maybe because it's getting real cold outside and I'm longing for some warmth, or maybe because I'm a fire sign and this is a fire sign month-for whatever reason-I woke up thinking of songs that have the word "fire" in their title.

Since my list wasn't growing fast enough, I started adding songs whose titles and/or lyrics include the word "fire" or included words related to fire-like "flame", or "smoke", or "heat", or "hot".

What fire, heat, hot, flame, spark, or smoke songs do you know?

I'll start the list in my next post.

THE PLATTERS -" Smoke gets in your eyes "

Here's the lyrics to this song:

SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES

They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
Oh, I of course replied
Something here inside cannot be denied

They said someday you'll find
All who love are blind
Oh, when your heart's on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes

So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away
I am without my love

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I can not hide
Oh, so I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes

Two fire songs! Hey, you guys are smokin!

And speaking of smoking, here's some info about that song "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes":

"Album: Best Of The Platters
Date: 1958
U.S. Chart: 1
U.K. Chart: 1

This was written in 1933 for the musical Roberta, starring Bob Hope. The lyrics were written by Otto Harbach and the music by Jerome Kern.

In 1934, four different recordings charted: Paul Whiteman #1, Leo Reisman #3, Emil Coleman #4, and Ruth Etting #15.

This version by The Platters is on the Hearts in Atlantis soundtrack. Nu Colours recorded a version that is featured on the Four Weddings And A Funeral soundtrack, and this song also appeared in the film Always by Stephen Spielberg. (thanks, Jocelyn - London, England)

Although The Platters recording has become the definitive version, recordings have been made by Artie Shaw (1941), Harry Belafonte (1950), Sarah Vaughan, and others.

The group Blue Haze remade this in 1973. Their version hit #27 on the US Chart.
The Jerry Garcia Band recorded this for the 1995 Smoke soundtrack. Director Wayne Wang made a video for the song featuring the band and Ashley Judd, one of the movie's stars.

This was used in the finale to the 1995 season of the British drama serial London's Burning, which led to cast member John Alford scoring a UK hit with it in February 1996. Alford's version reached #13, which is below the chart position achieved by the Platters, but ahead of versions by Bryan Ferry (#17 in 1974) and Blue Haze (#32 in 1972)."

"Hot Hot Hot" was first recorded 1984. Here's the lyrics to that song:

HOT HOT HOT
Arrow {Alphonsus Cassell}
Ole, ole, ole, ole
Ole, ole, ole, ole
Feeling hot, hot, hot
Feeling hot, hot, hot
Feeling hot, hot, hot

Me mind ina fire
Me soul on fire
Feeling hot, hot, hot

All around me
Feeling hot, hot, hot

What to do on a night like this?
Music sweet, I can't resist
We need a party song
I found a mento jam

So let me rom-bom-bom-bom
Let me rom-bom-bom-bom
Ole, ole, ole, ole
Ole, ole, ole, ole

Let me rom-bom-bom-bom
Let me rom-bom-bom-bom
Feeling hot, hot, hot
Feeling hot, hot, hot

See people rocking
And people jamming
Feeling hot, hot, hot

Keep the spirit
Come on let's do it
Feeling hot, hot, hot

Hands in the air, sending graze your time
Let music capture at your mind
We have this party song
I found a mento jam

So let me rom-bom-bom-bom
Let me rom-bom-bom-bom
Ole, ole, ole, ole

Subject: Lyr Add: WHO PAYS THE PIPER (Nancy Nicolson)
From: bfdk

McCalmans have a CD called "Flames on the Water", named after part of the chorus in this song (about the dangers of working on a North Sea oil rig):

Who pays the Piper
Nancy Nicolson

Chorus:
Who pays the piper, who pays the piper
Who pays the piper, who calls the tune
Who pays the piper, what is the fee
Flames on the water, death on the sea

And the tune is old and has always told
How the great, brave and bold they do flourish
How bravely they gamble with other men's lives
And profit as other men perish

Chorus

And the tune resounds and is always found
Where the ground receives yet another
Father of dazed and despairing young bairns
Or son of a desolate mother

Chorus

And the price is dear for the folks who fear
And who bear the burden of sorrow
For those who were lost when the graph of the cost
Crossed the graph of rich pickings tomorrow

Chorus

The Macs also recorded one called "Burn the Witch".

Nick Keir wrote and sings "Fires of Edinburgh".

"Keep the Home-fires Burning" (Lena Ford).

Best wishes,

Bente

By letting her seat wave
In such a way that
The customers say that

And we'll watch them blaze away,

Happy days will be returning,
While the band is playing,
Just let your troubles blaze away.

'Twas a hot afternoon
The last day of June
The sun was a demon

The clouds were afraid
One ten in the shade

The sun closed her eyes
As it climbed in the skies
And started to swelter

The sweat trickled down
The front of her gown
I thought it would melt her . . .

BALTIMORE FIRE

It was on a silver falls by a narrow
That I heard the cry I ever will remember,
The fire sent and cast its burning embers
On another faded city of our land.

cho: Fire, Fire, I heard the cry
From every breeze that passes by,
All the world was one sad cry of pity
Strong men in anguish prayed,
Calling loud to Heaven for aid,
While the fire in ruin was laying
Fair Baltimore, the beautiful city

Amid an awful struggle of commotion,
The wind blew a gale from the ocean,
Brave firemen struggled with devotion,
But their efforts all proved in vain.
cho:

The awful news did spread across the wire
Of another sad catastrophe so dire,
That Baltimore City is afire,
And sinking 'neath the foe's relentless hand.

From New Lost City Ramblers; originally recorded by Charlie
Poole.

I'VE GOT MY LOVE TO KEEP ME WARM

WARM (Johnny Mathis)

FEVER (mentioned above) is most associated with Peggy Lee

FALLING IN LOVE AGAIN (Ich Bin Von Kopf Bis Fuss) - Marlene Dietrich -
Contains the bridge:
"Men cluster to me like moths around a flame,
And if their wings burn, I know I'm not to blame."

"AN IRISH BALLAD" - Tom Lehrer
has a verse where the "maid"
"... set her sister's hair on fire,
Sing rickety-tickety-tin.
She set her sister's hair on fire,
And as the flames grew higher and higher,
She danced around the funeral pyre
Playing her violin-olin,
Playing her violin,"

"LET IT SNOW!"
contains the lyrics
"... the fire is so delightful"
"If you'll really hold me tight,
All the way home I'll be warm,"
and
"The fire is slowly dying."

WINTER WONDERLAND
"... Later on we'll conspire as we dream by the fire."

"Baby, It's Cold Outside" has lyrics about how to stay warm too.

Both these cheers are posted on my website: http://www.cocojams.com/cheerleader_cheers.htm

Technically, these are cheerleader cheers and not songs. But they emphasize the word "hot" and they are recited in a "sing/sung" manner.

Plus, it's interesting to speculate if these cheers have as their source the 1955 RED HOT example that Elmer Fudd posted in this thread on 05 Dec 06.

Looks like Jim Dixon is still winning the blue clicky award-not like any such contest was declared. But I'm just sayin...

**

When I was speculating on a source for the Red Hot children's cheerleader cheer, I overlooked number 6's 05 Dec 06 - 11:31 AM post which mentions "They're Red Hot" by Robert Johnson.

**

I appreciate folks posting song lyrics. Am I the only one who isn't familiar with many of these songs? At some points in time I'mma spend quite a bit of time away from work I'm supposed to be doing to look up those songs without lyrics to see what they are all about. But alas and alack!, this won't be time spent during my "real job" since for reasons I've never figured out, for the last four months, access to Mudcat has been blocked at my workplace.

Have I overlooked any song examples on this thread that include YouTube or other video hyperlinks [besides the ones I listed]?
If there are no others such examples, what's up with that??

Are alot of Mudcat Members & Guests still on dial-up? I know when I was on dial-up, I couldn't even think of visiting a site like YouTube. Is that the reason folks aren't posting YouTube examples? If not that, why not?

Be that as it may, a big THANK YOU to all for listing your examples any way.

Best wishes,

Azizi

NORWEGIAN WOOD

I once had a girl, or should I say, she once had me
She showed me her room. Isn't it good, Norwegian wood?

She asked me to stay and she told me to sit anywhere
So I looked around and I noticed there wasn't a chair

I sat on the rug, biding my time, drinking her wine
We talked until two and then she said, "It's time for bed"

She told me she worked in the morning and started to laugh
I told her I didn't and crawled off to sleep in the bath

And when I awoke I was alone, this bird had flown
So I lit a fire. Isn't it good, Norwegian wood?
