Fairport's latest release: critiques?

Anybody got any comments about the latest reincarnation of Fairport Convention and their latest release, "The Wood and the Wire?" How do you like the current roster, compared to the Richard Thomas/Sandy Denny heydays? How do you think this album compares to Unhalfbricking/What We Did On Our Holidays/Liege & Lief?

Or anything you care to comment on.

I'm a bit stuck on their early stuff, Leige and Leif being a favourite. Having said that, I like their new sound, and the songs. I don't think they have bettered Babbacombe Lee, though. Bron.

Love it, favourite tracks being, the dancer, wandering man, The game pieces and Banbury fair (home town nostalgia moments).

Hi, un-named GUEST, I wasn't that keen on The Wood & the Wire when it first came out, but I like a lot of it now, even though it's more 'Chris Leslie' than 'Fairport'. It's all much better live and the current line-up is a good one. They've done so much good stuff over the years in their different re-incarnations, but I'll always have a soft spot for the earlier stuff and everything that Richard Thompson has ever done!

They suffer from not having a decent VOICE (imho). Now, Kelly While (Albion Band) has a VOICE...

love the 'wood and the wire', however songs such as the dancer and banbury fayre whilst having that splendid fairport sound and musical arr' are lyrically pants! giving the impression to the 'folk newcomer' that you can turn any old piece of essay writing into a song. the words just seem so strieght laced, and for want of a better word...'gay'!! but Chris Lesly always looks very proud of them on the posters! give me 'too close to the wind' anyday!!
