Sad to report that Rod Shearman, singer, and writer of great songs like 'The Big Fella' and 'London River', is in hospital suffering from bowel cancer. That is all I know at the moment. Will post more details as they come in.

Same "London River" as was sung by Fairport Convention?

Anyway, good thoughts and a prayer for Mr. Shearman.

Alex

Rod is a lovely man - a real gentleman. I meet him two or three times a year( at festivals) and always enjoy his company. Sorry to hear he has problems and hope that any further news will be encouraging.
Keeping fingers crossed

Hazel

He did fight a different cancer in the "sump" area, and won.

Here is the message I had from Pearl and Tony O'Neill today,
Hi All Thought we'd give you an update on Rod, for those that don't know the cancer of the bowel returned and Rod has put up a great fight.
Unfortunately the treatment didn't work 2nd time round, he is in hospital at the moment with a blood clot in his leg. We went to see him yesterday and he is feeling much better and is hoping that he will be allowed home soon. He has a telephone in his room and the number is (XXXXXXXXcontact me by PM if you want the number).

He is cheerful and looks surprisingly well. He says that he does not want to know how long he has got. If a miracle can happen we hope it happens to him.
Bless his heart.

Love
Pearl & Tony

Sorry to hear about Rod -- the NY Pinewoods club was considering putting him on when he made the trip to the US.

Though I don't know him personally I was really looking forward to meeting/hearing him. A good friend of mine does London River -- and of course, I have nipped it for myself.

Burl - could you please pass on the good wishes of NY Pinewoods (and me?) Thanks

Joy

Is this the same Rod Shearman who released "Heres to Friends?" If it is there is someone who was a dear friend of Rod's who now lives in Australia, currently holidaying in The UK, and I'm sure would love to meet up with him.

To Guest Glen and Bryan. Yes it is the same Rod Shearman. We visited Rod over May bank holiday. He was back at home, and although his health was very poorly, he was in good spirits. He hope to get back up to London to visit him again soon.

Brian

I've never heard Rod Shearman sing, but his picture has been in front of me for days, in an advert for his CD Here's to Friends. I sincerely wish he'll get well and be able to sing again!

I thought people might like to know that Rod is back in hospital: I'm sure Tony and Pearl won't mind my sharing their e-mail with you:

We visited Rod this afternoon (Sunday) and he is back in hospital, St Mary's, Praed Street, Paddington, Manvers Ward (which is floor 8 in the Queen Mother wing, if anybody is thinking of going).

He had collapsed at 0200 Monday morning and his night nurse had called an ambulance and he has been there ever since.

On the whole he was very chipper, having his best day, as he told us and appeared to us no worse than when we saw him two weeks ago. Although I must say that his spirits were much higher this time and we had a chuckle or two about forming escape committees and the problems of escaping from the eighth floor of a skyscraper of a hospital...

His future, as regards where he'll go next or when, is uncertain but I rather think that he would prefer to go to Bembridge Ward, the Paliative Unit at St Charles, other than back to his flat, I think that has been too much of a struggle for him, however his sister, Greta, was there when we arrived, and she had talked about moving in with him if he had to go back to his flat.

The number of the phone by his bed, at the moment, is 0702 880 9173 so give him a ring but please bear in mind that he has almost lost his voice and can only speak bearly above a whisper.

So there we are, not good news but not bad either.....

Tony and Pearl.
