Subject: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: Dave Swan Date: 24 Feb 03 - 12:31 PM I'm sure someone in the Mud can help sort this out. I need to figure out how Tango fits with the other names listed. These are the names of a friend's dogs and he won't say how Tango fits the group. Jazz gave birth to T-Bone (Walker), Ella (Fitzgerald), (Ry) Cooder and (?) Tango (?). A long stretch is the Jazz Tango giutar. There's got to be a better answer here somewhere. Any thoughts? I'll buy you a pint. Thanks, Dave |

Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: Roger in Baltimore Date: 24 Feb 03 - 12:34 PM Dave, It could be a stretch that the dog's named after D'jango Reinhart (pardon me if the spelling is off) a well known jazz guitarist. Roger in Baltimore |

Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: GUEST,ClaireBear Date: 25 Feb 03 - 11:59 AM Is your friend into Japanese comics? Found this: blicky Text from page: "Jazz Tango is a one-off shounen ai manga by mangaka Akisato Wakuni, published by Shougakukan. It is a story about a young man named Kazuomi, and what happens when a stranger walks into his life who looks exactly like him; a stranger who seems determined to turn everything that makes sense to him upside down." Not vaguely akin to the other entries, I'll grant, but maybe a possibility? No stranger than naming a litter of kittens Lassitude, Fortitude, Resolution, Intrepid, and Dennis -- which I once did. |

We sit here for hours scratching our noggins....those of us who are TRUE nerds, wrack our brains for the tiniest detail (like didn't T Bone Walker record "Sit on my Tango, Blues" in 1942....etc.) and what ends up happening is that the original culprit (the dog namer) is confusing "tango" with the name of John Hammond's dog ("rango" or something) Oh well....thinking caps on..... Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: catspaw49 Date: 26 Feb 03 - 05:19 PM So at a quarter til 5 in the AM, I wake up with a splitting headache and after overdosing with anything I can find to kill pain, I sit down and read a PM from El Swanno asking about this thread........so like a dumbass, I read it. 12 hours later, I still have a nasty headache.....pressure front moving across.....I've consumed a lifetime supply of Tylenol, Naprosyn, and even had a couple of percs.......and THIS DAMN THREAD HAS BEEN ON MY MIND ALL DAY!!!!!!!! Closer to blues than jazz maybe but still nothing fits with tango.....jazz wise it would have made some sense with Art Tatum, Red Tango, but still no answer. Blue Tango....doesn't really relate to any of them........I even had a brief nap and a dream about Ella Fitzgerald and I NEVER dream about Ella Fitzgerald. WE NEED AN ANSWER HERE!!!!!!! Dave, when you see this clown, give him a message from me.....Tell him to fuck himself. And fuck you too for posting this. Geeziz, I hate this kinda' stuff........ Spaw |

Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: catspaw49 Date: 27 Feb 03 - 11:43 AM Yeah, this one still has me going........and I think Rick may have a point, or this guy has a really creative mind....always a good possibility of course. I did some really entertaining searches on Google trying to link things somehow. I even tried to find out if any of the three had a dog named Tango...........Tell ya', if this turns out to be a mistake (Django/Tango) and this guy lives in the Yukon, ask him if the words "Letter Bomb" have any meaning to him............. Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: Jeri Date: 27 Feb 03 - 11:59 AM Hey Dave, ask your "friend" if he's gonna name his next dog "Margarine." The connection is Paris, as in Last Tango In: Ry Cooder recorded Paris Texas in 1971 after a visit there. "In 1974, Cooder produced what is generally regarded as his best album, Paradise and Lunch..." T-Bone Walker: "A 1968 visit to Paris resulted in one of his best latter-day albums, I Want a Little Girl, for Black & Blue (and later issued stateside on Delmark)." French Kiss soundtrack, Ella Fitzgerald, "I Love Paris." |

Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: Jeri Date: 27 Feb 03 - 11:18 PM I hope I'm right, Dave. I'm working on a Grand Conspiracy UNification Theory next. Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: ddw Date: 27 Feb 03 - 11:38 PM OK, Swanno, here's something to chew on.... I put the question to a friend of mine who loves this kind of thing and this is what she came up with. She thinks it revolves around a jazz festival, possibly Montreal, which a few years ago was the first major breakout for a group called Norteno Tango Bandoneon, a tango nuevo quintet. In July 1999, the Montreal Jazz Festival created a new annual award called the "Ella Fitzgeral Award". They did this to mark that it was the same year as the 100th anniversary of the birth of jazz in New Orleans. Another link to the puppy? Also, there was a band listed at the fest called the "New Birth Jazz Band" Was Jazz (the dog) being bred? T-Bone's first medicine show gig was with "Dr. Breeding's Medicine Show". Strrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrretch. But he is one of the very, very few blues musicians respected by jazz experts. Another was Lonnie Johnson. Now we're out of her stuff and I have a thought -- tho' not enough time to research it right now. Hasn't Ry Cooder done a bit of crossover into jazz lately? Has he been at the MJF? Maybe somebody with more knowledge of his career can fill in that gap. Cheers, david |

Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: Jeri Date: 28 Feb 03 - 11:40 AM Ddw might have it. My theory doesn't explain the connection between tango and jazz, either dog-wise or music-wise. |

Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: Dave Swan Date: 28 Feb 03 - 02:22 PM ddw, That's great stuff. The dog owner in question is Canadian, these dogs are c. 1999. Coincidence? Hmmm. So, then, Inspector isn't it true that late in 1999 the accused had relations with a dog named.... What? Ooops, wrong thread. D |

Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: catspaw49 Date: 28 Feb 03 - 03:26 PM damn david....That one really looks great too. Maybe better than Jeri's.....Lots of good tie-ins. Man, I AM impressed with both of you!!!! Say Brother Dave, if this guy says something like, "Huh? Oh man, no, see, like I just thought I'd give 'em all some music kinda' names....that's all.".......You have my permission to split his fockin' head with an axe and/or maybe shove a Haligan tool up his ass. Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: GUEST Date: 28 Feb 03 - 03:55 PM They're all linked to names off the liquor store shelf: Johnny (T-Bone) Walker scotch; Old (Ella) Fitzgerald blended whisky; Ry (whisky) Cooder, and Tango, pre-mixed screwdrivers. You have to drink a lot of booze to put up with four dogs. |

Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: Dave Swan Date: 15 Mar 03 - 02:06 PM An ANSWER. I've just returned from ten lovely days mushing out of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory at Muktuk Kennels where the dogs live. Jazz, a senior citizen sled dog who now lives on the nice warm floors of the house is the mother of the litter in question. I had a great day's run on the Takhini River with T-Bone, ruffled the ears of and fed the faces of the others. The evening I arrived at Muktuk I presented Frank Turner, Muktuk's owner and highly dedicated and sucessful long distance musher, with a print out of this thread. Imagine my trepidation. I'm about to spend a week and a half in this man's house, drive his dogs, camp out at 40 below with his staff, and I'm showing him what Catspaw has to say about him! Frank had to take his glasses off and wipe the tears, he laughed so hard. The thread soon became required reading around the kennel. Frank sheepishly admitted that while there was a link among Ella, T-Bone and Cooder, Tango was......just another musical form and seemed a good name to add to the litter. Thanks for all of the help, friends. Thanks also for all of the laughs. Go dogsledding, it'll do you a world of good. There's no better place to do it than with Frank. D |

Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: C-flat Date: 15 Mar 03 - 02:15 PM So Dave, how did your friend enjoy getting the "Haligan tool up his ass"? To think I wasted an HOUR thinking about the TANGO connection!! Still thanks for putting our minds at rest. |

Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: catspaw49 Date: 15 Mar 03 - 02:28 PM Oh yeah......Tango was just musical huh? Oh man, no, see, like I just thought I'd give 'em all some music kinda' names....that's all.".......You have my permission to split his fockin' head with an axe and/or maybe shove a Haligan tool up his ass."......................Since I got it right, is there a prize???? I also assume he has a bad case of Haliganass, but if not, lemmee ask ya' this...........When you go out mushin' with Ol' Frank, is it just the two of you? All alone? "Course it would take some explaining to the Rescue Ranger that would show up. RR: Are you sure of what happened? ME: Yeah....We were mushing along and a snow squall came up and I guess Ol' Frank went over the side of that steep hill...... RR: Well sir, that could be, but there are some problems with that scenario? ME: Like what? RR: Well, I think it's the fact his head had been split with an ax and there was a Haligan tool up his ass. ME: Oh that.....He probably picked up those injuries in the fall. RR: Uh....Sir, it doesn't seem to gel with the facts ME: Sure it does.....That whole hillside is littered with Haligans and axes. RR: Well sir, we only saw the one......... ME: Well the snow squall probably covered them up and then the avalanche carried them away. RR: I've been meaning to ask you about that avalanche.... ME: It was terrible, never would have expected it. RR: Neither would we so I have to ask you about this dynamite in your sled....... Spaw |
|
Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: Dave Swan Date: 15 Mar 03 - 02:38 PM It would probably take dynamite to make an impression. Frank is a kind man, gentle with his dogs as can be, and possessed of all the lefty values we hold so dear. However you must remember that this is a man who hops on a dogsled and trots a thousand miles to Fairbanks. Compact, powerful upper body, stout legs. Observing him, one has the impression he could play a Uniroyal like a concertina. So if you were to tangle with him, it'd be best to pack a lunch. I'll leave it to you. D |

Subject: RE: T-Bone, Ella, Cooder....Tango? From: Dave Swan Date: 15 Mar 03 - 03:01 PM Let's see. You can drive a five ton Chevy flat bed in compound low all day and do lots of useful work at a crawl, or you can hop into the nearest Ferrarri, zoom through corners, accelerate to near light speed, cruise in comfort. They're both fun, they both require your close attention, but sledding also gets you the company of dogs having a great time themselves. Sled dogs are carnivores, oxen are herbivores. Not so much the location of the dispenser at the odor of the product, if you take my meaning. D |

I mean ... coming up with an intricate puzzle, which cannot be possibly figured out, evoking all thse apparently BRILLIANT clever lines of assocation which are totally actually FATUOUS because the real conundrum inside the mystery is a fucking VACUUM with NO CONTENT, there's NO prize, and then they can't even beat up the perpetrator because YOU say he's all big and tough like, some dogsledding character we never heard of from a place we think about once a goddamn CENTURY, and then you pop up and yell SUWWWPWIIIIIZE!!! There IS no %^@&_#% answer!!!!!! Hardy-har-fuckin'-har!! I mean --- jeeze--- you have two things to be grateful for, buddy. One is that these connections are just virtual so you can get away with this shit because neither Spaw, Rick nor even brilliant Jeri have the energy to go chasing down this pipe and choke you to death. The other thing being that we love you so much we'll cut you just enough slack to get away with this ONE time. But just don't try to pull this shit again, man!!
