Date: 12 May 05 - 12:43 PM As I recall Ry always has a backing band of around 75 people which suggests he is less than secure in his own ability and maybe the bravado is an active compensatory factor trying to assuade from the fact that he is very short.Still a brilliant guitar player on his day though even though he has murdered a couple of Rock n' Roll classics. Honky Tonk Woman (of which he is widely believed to be the uncredited composer/arranger)? To my mind, the large ensembles he has put together over the years have always been a testament to his unusually broad and creative musical vision. The first time I went to a Ry Cooder concret, he had just assembled the band featuring a Black Gospel trio as backing vocalists along with Tex-Mex accordian master Flaco Jimenez. Who else would have foreseen how well they'd all work together? And who else could have made Buena Vista Social Club happen? The man is a genius ~ period. |

Date: 12 May 05 - 01:14 PM My Dear Poppagator, Is there no room for levity in your undying admiration for the acclaimed Mr Cooder (Barra to his friends).I remember buying "Bop Till You Drop" when it was released and thinking "the boy done good". As you state his vision and ability to diversify into unchartered musical territory is unquestionable and I applaud most of his achievements but I am less than impressed when I hear him churn out flatline versions of "All Shook Up", "Shake,Rattle & Roll" and "Lawdy Miss Clawdy" etc.After saying this I do quite like some of his sojourns in Sweet Soul Music i.e. "Dark End Of The Street" "6345789" etc. So there you have it Poppagator -lighten up Brother he ain't no Ray Charles or Sam Cooke. There is something about his personality that I am suspicious of. I once stood in a group of people that included Taj Mahal, in passing I referred to Mr Cooder with whom I know he has recored, Taj's reaction was somewhat of distaste although I search for better words. It was as if the name was bitter to him. Perhaps he is a stealer of ideas, perhaps not as reptilian as messer's Jagger and Richards whom Mr Cooder described as such. But I just feel that Mr Cooder wants to be perceived a certain way and he immerses his playing in rich veins of other peoples music where the credit is not always his. Actually his style of playing is not for me, I think of him as a 'harmonic' guitarist concerned with sounds, textures... rather than lyrical. Mr Clapton, Winter.., Taylor, Derringer these are lyrical guitarists and the one's for me. |

It's a pity half of the established/popular musicians don't have his enthusiasm and ability to experiment on record. But I'd rather a Charlie Parker.. there's a lyrical player. |
