This is a dumb question, one that I am embarrased to ask.

After playing his music for a number of years, someone said that I am not pronouncing James Keelaghan properly. I've been saying "Keel-ah-han", with the "g" silent.   How far off have I've been?

That's the way I have always pronounced it, Ron, and no one ever has corrected me.

JAMES KEELAGHAN (pronounced without the "g") (info from here).

Kee-la-han.

Met James years back and that is how he pronounces it. Figure he ought to know.

Thanks. I feel better, someone gave me a very odd pronuciation with the "g" that did not seem right.

I'd have thought it would be the same way you'd pronounce County Monaghan - no "g" but not exactly a strait "h" either", more the sound you have in Lough. But that's just a guess, and after all, he's not Irish.

However it is pronounced, he is one heck of a muscian/writer and a nice guy, to boot. I, too, have had the oppertunity to meet him a couple of times, and the pronunciation in the first comment above seems to be correct.

The person who corrected you has no understanding of Irish/Scots Gaelic pronounciation. You are correct in the way you are pronouncing it.

All the best,

Mick

We Kun-aid-ee-uns love our Key-la-han, eh?
Reminds me of how many times I've heard people mispronounce Cockburn.
