I remember this one from Columbia's Musical Treasury entitled "Greatest Hits for the Children You Love." I have this old collection from the early 70s on records(!!)but can't play them at this time due to a broken turntable needle. Maybe you can find a copy at the library...it's the first song on record 2, side 1 and is indeed by Burl Ives. Good luck!

I remember one more verse rather than the whole thing:

2. Every day I watered it well and watched it carefully I hoped one day that it would be a great big lollipop tree

I searched around the 'Net and couldn't find anywhere with his lyrics. Did find the Limelighters album, Through Children's Eyes, at cdworld.com, which lists the song, but no audio was available.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Just wait, someone on here will know it.

I know that poem. I didn't know if the song was the same or not. It's the sugar plum tree. I can still ehar my mom reading it. It was one of my favourites, too. Here it is, from a Childcraft book:

Have you ever heard of the Sugar-Plum Tree?
'Tis a marvel of great renown!
It blooms on the shore of the Lollipop Sea
In the garden of Shut-Eye Town;
The fruit that it bears is so wondrously sweet
(As those who have tasted it say)
That good little children have only to eat
Of that fruit to be happy next day.

When you've got to the tree, you would have a hard time
To capture the fruit which I sing;
The tree is so tall that no person could climb
To the boughs where the sugar-plums swing!
But up in that tree sits a chocolate cat,
And a gingerbread dog prowls below --
And this is the way you contrive to get at
Those sugar-plums tempting you so:

You say but the word to that gingerbread dog
And he barks with such terrible zest
That the chocolate cat is at once all agog,
As her swelling proportions attest.
And the chocolate cat goes cavorting around
From this leafy limb unto that,
And the sugar-plums tumble, of course, to the ground
Hurrah for that chocolate cat!

There are marshmallows, gumdrops, and peppermint canes,
With stripings of scarlet or gold,
And you carry away of the treasure that rains
As much as your apron can hold!
So come, little child, cuddle closer to me
In your dainty white nightcap and gown,
And I'll rock you away to that Sugar-Plum Tree
In the garden of Shut-Eye Town.

THE LOLLIPOP TREE
As sung by Burl Ives

One fine day in early spring I played a funny trick:
Right in the yard behind our house I planted a lollipop stick.
Then every day I watered it well and watched it carefully.
I hoped one day that stick would grow to be a lollipop tree.

chorus: Ha Ha Ha, Ho Ho Ho, what a sight to see!
me and my lollipop, lollipop, lollipop, lolli-lolli-lollipop tree.

Then one day I woke to find a very lovely sight-
A tree all full of lollipops had grown in the dark of the night!
I sat beneath that wonderful tree and looked up with a grin,
And when I opened up my mouth a pop would drop right in!

Chorus: Ha Ha Ha, Ho Ho Ho, what a place to be!
Under a lollipop, lollipop, lollipop, lolli-lolli-lollipop tree.

Winter came and days grew cold, as winter days will do.
On my tree, my lovely tree, not one little lollipop grew.
From every branch an icicle hung; the twigs were bare as bones,
But when I broke the icicles off they turned to ice cream cones!

Chorus: Ha Ha Ha, Ho Ho Ho, how I danced with glee!
Under the lollipop, lollipop, lollipop, lolli-lolli-lollipop tree.

There is a CD out of Burl Ives called the Little White Duck and other favorites. I have the original album from which they took the songs, but unfortunately a couple of songs are omitted, one being the lollipop tree.

Hmmm. I cut and pasted this from another thread where I had used the proper line breaks. I see that they don't carry over in a cut and paste. Or did I do something wrong?

Margarita,

the line breaks just do not carry over in a cut and paste. The fastest way is to put them into a word processing programm as MS-Word and give the whole text the 'replace' treatment replacing all 'carriage return's by <br>

You did nothing wrong. (To see how to get a line break - look up HTML in the forum...) You just don't know all the little quirks of the 'Cat yet. *grin*

THE LOLLIPOP TREE
(Joe Darion and George Kleinsinger)

One fine day in early spring, I played a funny trick:
Right in the yard behind our house, I planted a lollipop stick.
And every day I watered it well and watched it carefully,
I hoped that stick would someday grow to be a lollipop tree.

Chorus: ha, ha, ha, ho, ho, ho, what a sight to see!
Me and my lollipop, lollipop, lollipop, lolly, lolly, lollipop tree.

Then one day I woke to find a very lovely sight-
A tree all full of lollipops had grown in the dark of the night!
I sat beneath that wonderful tree and looked up with a grin,
And when I opened up my mouth, a pop would drop right in! Chorus

Winter came and days grew cold, as winter days will do.
On my tree, my lovely tree, not one little lollipop grew.
From every branch an icicle hung, the twigs were bare as bones,
But when I broke the icicles off, they turned to ice cream cones! Chorus

That's te one I was thinking of Kat. I'm anon this week. I get it confused with my other old fave "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod" aand I just thought of another idea: could it be that Lollipop song that Shirley Temple sang? the good ship lollipop?

I don't think that's the one, Cara, for the lollipop. I love the tune that goes with Wynken etc.!

Sounds like you had a nice lunch with Catspaw & Sons.

Well, this is what I have from my very ancient lyrics sheet to the Limeliters LP mentioned above.

One fine day in early spring I played a funny trick
Right in the yard beind our house I planted a lollipop stick
Then every day I watered it well and watched it carefully
I hoped one day that stick would grow to be a lollipop tree

Chorus:
Ah ha ha -- Oh ho ho -- what a place to be
Under my lollipop lollipop lollipop
Lolli-lolli-lollipop tree
Under my lollipop lollipop lollipop
Lolli-lolli-lollipop tree.

Then one day I woke to find a very lovely sight
A tree all full of lollipops had grown in the dead of night
Well I sat beneath that wonderful tree and looked up with a grin
And when I opened up my mouth a lollipop dropped right in.

(Sing Chorus)

Winter came and days grew cold, as winter days will do
And on my tree, my lovely tree, not one little lollipop grew (cry)
From every branch an icicle hung, the limbs were bare as bones
But when I broke those icicles off, they turned to ice cream cones.

(Sing Chorus Twice)
