A bit of news about these two, whom I see folks post about periodicallly. Cindy just released a new CD called Cat Tales (I always want to type Tails). It is, as is obvious, all songs about cats. It was released in November, in time for the holiday season, and quite a few people solved a lot of gift giving problems with that one CD. Songs include some originals, including a hysterical song called Rudy's Great Adventure that tells the story of the cat that got its head stuck in a garbage disposal (and lived to tell, er ... meow ... about it), plus songs from Cheryl Wheeler, Buddy Mondlock, Les Barker, Nancy White, Grant Livingston, The Berrymans and others.

And, to top it off, Steve and Cindy have just completed work on a new duet album, which should be available shortly. All of their CDs (and books) can now be purchased from the online store on their web site, which also has the duo, trio and quartet CDs they recorded with others.

Their site is at www.compassrosemusic.com.

Anyone who has missed out on them so far wouldn't go wrong by checking out their album "A Sense of Place". I've seen them live three times now, and will again given the chance.

They are performing in Richmond, Virginia this Sunday at The Shady Grove Coffee House . I'm looking forward to seeing them. I opened for Steve Gillett back in the 80's at a coffeehouse in New Jersey. He is a fine performer and songwriter, and a very nice guy. Haven't met Cindy.

We just had them at an Acoustic Brew series show here in the middle of PA this past weekend.

Absolutely wonderful show, and they were very motivating during their workshop in the afternoon.

I would guess they would be quite pleased to know that I left the show that evening feeling very inspired to write and play!

one web site states:
"Since their marriage in April of 1989, Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen have been traveling, performing and recording together."

so, that answers THAT question...

and here
http://www.compassrosemusic.com
you can find their concert schedule
http://www.compassrosemusic.com/dates.html
and although ther eis no year given
(except in the beginning where a concert form 2000
is mentioned) i velieve it is current..
and see that they are heading toward
Big Sur..

for anyone who is publisheing a web page'
be reiminded it helps to specify the year..
as some pages appear years after thier time
and this could prevent confusion...

Cindy's CD of cat songs is just wonderful. All the songs are truly great with a lot of insights into why felines might exhibit some of their "unique" traits. --- And Steve is a fine songwriter and singer, but watch his hands. He's a great picker with a truly unique guitar style. These two are old friends of ours and you who get to hear them are in for a treat.

I told Steve and Cindy that I was learning Welsh so now I'll have to send them something that they can do for their visit to Wales - maybe Lleucu Llwyd?
I hope that they'll have time for a Frank Hennessy interview.

Steve Gillette playing guitar is like watching Pete Sutherland's fiddle bow hand ... or watching waves on a Pacific beach. A fluid, hypnotic rhythm, fluid and smooth as glass. Hearing it is wonderful, folks, but you have to see it to get the full experience.

Thanks, Art and Carol! And hats off to Steve and Cindy!

Cheers,

Elaborating on what Art (Hi Art!) and Arne said, it is easy to get wrapped up in the songs and the harmony and not notice his playing- he's not playing for sheer flash - but once you start watching him, it's mesmerizing. He was playing here with the flatpick and middle& ring finger, whatever you want to call that- Nashville picking, hybrid picking, whatever.

If you're truly intrigued, Steve has an instructional CD available through their web site called How to Play the Guitar Like I Do. (I have it. But I don't!)

Ask for their new song Hurricane (not to be confused with Eye of the Hurricane, an older Steve song.) It's a keeper!

First, "Open Mike", the tour schedule at their site is indeed current. Steve and Cindy had been maintaining the site themselves, but they have turned it over to me although they will continue to provide new content and keep a hand in. You are 100% correct; a schedule on the web should always include the year. I will add it.

Their new duet CD, Being There, is being manufactured and should be available by the first week of March. It is available for pre-order from their web site. The new CD includes the song Hurricane that Jim mentioned. I heard it for the first time the week before last in Glens Falls, NY. It is indeed a keeper.

Finally, I too am intrigued by his guitar style, and have spent some time listening to the CD. I am probably hopeless, but it is definitely a good hour of fingerpicking instruction. And, for those who have said that you have to see Steve play, well I agree with that. Both Cindy and I have already told Steve to think about doing a video of that CD.

Also, for anyone who is working on their guitar playing, Steve will be putting together some additional material to support the instructional CD. The first thing that will be posted is the tablature for Darcy Farrow. You can check for it at:

Someone should tell bookers of US acts that 200 miles in the UK is twice as far as 200 miles over there. They're going to get white line fever!

Subject: Steve Gillette & Cindy Mangsen 2020
From: Joe Offer

I've been a fan of Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen for a long, long time. I even talked my wife into going on a Cindy & Steve cruise to four islands in Hawaii a few years ago, and we had singing every night.

Here's their latest newsletter:

Dear Friends,

This isn't the message we had hoped to be sending out this month, but then, we've learned to change our expectations these days. We've been rather peacefully ensconced at home for the past three months, surfacing only to grocery shop, mow the lawn, take the recycling to the dump ... you get the idea. Perhaps a lot like your own lives! That's how it will be for the foreseeable future (come on, vaccine!!!), but we do want to let you know about a few places where we'll virtually appear before your eyes in the next few weeks:

Saturday, June 20 8 PM Pacific Time
Occidental Center for the Arts
Keeping the Arts in our Hearts: Virtual Variety Show 2
We'll be doing a song, and so will 27 other talented artists, including The Black Brothers, Nina Gerber, Darcy (yes, THAT Darcy, Steve's sister) & Oak Reinier, Chris Williamson ... and more! OCA has been one of our very favorite West Coast stops for the past seven years, and it was actually the last concert we played before Covid shut us all down. So we're delighted to be part of their celebration of song and story. The show will be broadcast on OCA's YouTube channel, and will be available on demand after the 20th (for you East Coasters who don't feel like tuning in at 11 PM EDT).

Fri-Sat-Sun, June 26-28
This was to be 40th Anniversary of the Old Songs Festival, but we'll save that actual celebration for next year. In the meantime, festival director Joy Bennett has solicited new video sets from many of the scheduled artists. We don't have details yet on how and when to tune in, but we'll update you when we can. The audio portion will also be broadcast by Ron Olesko, who hosts "Traditions" (WFDU Radio) and Folk Music Notebook (internet radio). Cindy's pretty sure she's attended (or performed in) at least 37 of the Old Songs fests, so you can bet we'll be there in spirit.

Steve's been keeping busy with his web blog, About the Song, a series of weekly articles and videos focusing on the writing of individual songs and the issues that arise in the creative process. This week's article is on the writing of a "traditional" Irish song/story and its accompanying fiddle tune, Tir na nOg. Please take a look, whether you're a songwriter or just an innocent bystander.

Our music is always available on our website, so please remember that you can order CDs/books and download new songs from our webstore. The ten downloads are mostly original, including Other People's Money (Steve's rant on billionaires-behaving-badly) and Rule of Thumb (Cindy's alternative creation myth). You can see the list of songs and listen to clips here. We also have downloads available for three of our older CDs (Live in Concert, The Ways of the World, and A Sense of Place ). And if you're interested in PDFs of sheet music , we currently have eight leadsheets to offer.

We hope you're all surviving these current plagues and challenges. On the bright side, humanity was more than due to hit the Reset button, and the opportunity for positive change is everywhere. Keep the faith.

If you'd rather not receive these occasional emails from us, you can use the "unsubscribe" link at the bottom of this message or just reply with "remove" in the subject line (but we'll miss you).

Cindy & Steve

Hi Cindy & Steve,

I am in So. Calif. How do I access the program exactly?
Do I just click on something that will take me right to the show?
I'm sorry, not much of a tech person so if you can let me know, do I just click on some words to take me to the show, or does it involve ALSO having to download some program to be able to hear the program?
Thank you,
Lin
